What was that whole walrus thing with the hippies about?

I sometimes listen to the local Oldies station and it has some pretty good songs, but sometimes the artists used lyrics for their time that no longer make sense.

And in a couple of songs that sound like they were protest songs from the 60's mention what sounds like "walrus," though I am not sure it is walrus. But if it is, what were they referencing? And if it is not walrus, what are they actually saying in those songs and what did they mean by it?

Thanks to anyone who knows what I'm talking about (I understand I didn't give the best description, but I don't know the names of the songs) and is willing to help.

The first song that popped in my head was also The Beatles' "I am the Walrus". This is what I found on it...

PLAYBOY: What about the walrus itself?

LENNON: It's from "The Walrus and the Carpenter." "Alice in Wonderland." To me, it was a beautiful poem. It never dawned on me that Lewis Carroll was commenting on the capitalist and social system. I never went into that bit about what he really meant, like people are doing with the Beatles' work. Later, I went back and looked at it and realized that the walrus was the bad guy in the story and the carpenter was the good guy. I thought, Oh, ****, I picked the wrong guy. I should have said, "I am the carpenter." But that wouldn't have been the same, would it? [Singing] "I am the carpenter....""

Definitely the 60's. ok so do you know The Beatles?...... I would assume you do. I personally am obsessed with them. Anyway int he 60's The Beatles were HUGE, like HUGE, girls went crazy for them. (If I was there I would have gone crazy too) anyway, The Beatles did a song called I Am The Walrus. Which, in the lyrics state "i am the egg man, I am the egg man, I am the walrus.....coo coo ca choo" sounds crazy I know, at the time the psychedelic age had started with hippies and flower power and frankly drugs were greatly in use. The Beatles experimented and frequently used weed and LSD. Their drug use had influenced some very interesting songs, like "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" which John Lennon claims was not written based on LSD. Anyway, the song I am the walrus was written, in a time where hippies ruled. The song implies that John Lennon is the walrus. Which I don't exactly know what that means, but apparently he is also the egg man. I assume this is what you are talking about. Also other artists in the 60's picked up on the idea of the walrus having significant representation in hippie culture, as the hippie role model himself John Lennon had sang about it. Hope it helped. :)
