Should I get checked for bipolar disorder?
My girlfriend and I have been have this ongoing argument about whether or not I should go get tested for the chances of developing bipolar disorder (her idea not mine). I've never suffered from depression or mania nor do I have any symptoms relating to bipolar disorder... her basis for telling me to get tested is that my dad has it so it's possible that I could get it too -_-
So the question is:
1. Is it even possible to accurately test the chances of developing the disorder later in life?
2. Is there a need to take any action at all?

No they will not be able to diagnose or do anything for you. They won't be able to diagnose because you don't have any of the symptoms. Tell your girlfriend to stop worrying so much lol.

Your gf is speaking from utter ignorance - there is no test for bipolar disorder! If someone has mania and severe depression, that's what leads to a diagnosis. Get this diagnosis, and you can't be a pilot, commercial truck or ferry driver, in the military, or a doctor. You probably can't be a cop or work for the FBI or anything else that requires a background check. You won't be able to buy life insurance at normal prices. She knows nothing and thinks bipolar is some la la wonderful thing. I am very sorry I ever sought help for bipolar disorder 20 years ago - the treatment only made matters worse for 15 years and the drugs turned a struggling person into a totally disabled one. I'm clawing back my life now, off those drugs.
Bipolar is VASTLY overdiagnosed right now, and if your dad was diagnosed with anything but bipolar 1, and he's not had clear cut manias ( drug side effects don't count), you should be suspicious if that diagnosis is even right. If he does have bipolar 1, at MOST your risk is 20%, and many people say those studies are bogus, because they didn't do the statistics correctly, overestimating the genetic effects.
There is NO TEST for bipolar at all. If bipolar turns out to be genetic, which that's not a sure thing, there must be MANY causes of bipolar or the genes would have been figured out already thru human genome research. Just because something runs in families doesn't make it genetic. Could be epigenetic, could be toxic learning, or developmental etc.

Studies have already shown that if there is a family history of bipolar, your chances increase. I believe the risk is around 25% if you have a sibling with it and 50% when you have a parent with it. If your girlfriend has concerns about you showing possible symptoms then I would talk to a doctor.

I don't think they can test to see if you're gonna have bipolar later on in life. Most people are diagnosed in their early twenties, but there are some who slip through the cracks & don't find out til alot later. It is very possible that if your dad has it,you can have it,but if you aren't having any symptoms there is no reason to check. The good thing is,when you know someone who has it,then you can really tell what to look for.Hope this helps, good luck!
