If I was at stop sign 1st. and going straight then another car was turning left who has the right away?
I was at a stop sign a good minute or so trying to go straight when another car across the street pulled up. When traffic was clear I went to cross and they tried to turn left at the same time. But I was there first. The woman nearly hit me but I was there first. So who had the right away?

sOUNDS LIKE YOU WERE Waiting for her. You had the RoW because you were 1st, she took because she was on right and you didn't go. You give up your RoW by not going, the world doesn't have to wait on you.

I'm assuming this was a 2-way stop, which is by far the most common kind of stop sign control at a typical 4-way intersection that has no traffic light. In that case, contrary to popular belief, it makes no difference who was there first or who is on the right. The rule is that left-turning traffic yields to all other traffic. So the other driver made a mistake.
It is very common to see this mistake at 2-way stops, especially when cars line up at the stop signs, so be alert and watch that other car like a hawk.

Here's how the right of way system works:
1) the first car approaching the intersection has the right of way.
2) the car to the right has the right of way at a four way stop with stop signs.
At a light the car going straight has the right of way.
It depends on if it was a four way intersection controlled by lights or stop signs. If the lights are not functioning, the stop sign rules apply.

Here's an easy rule to remember:
The car to the right has right-of-way.
If the car is not to your right, and you arrive at the stop sign together, the first person to arrive has right-of-way.
When in doubt, wave the other driver on. This completely negates the risk of a collision. Some drivers' are p****ks, and will force their way through an intersection whether they have right-of-way or not.
Cheers.

Did she have a stop sign?
If she had a stop sign you had the right of way. You were at the intersection first. If she did not have the stop sign she had it.
