New World Translation. Best Translation?

well this translation says jehovah in the new testament and the original doesn't mention the word jehovah, jehovah isn't used in the original greek, either in hebrew bible

Jason BeDuhn, associate professor of religious studies at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff, Arizona, U.S.A., examined and compared for accuracy eight major translations, including the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, published by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The result?

While critical of some of its translation choices, BeDuhn called the New World Translation a “remarkably good” translation, “better by far” and “consistently better” than some of the others considered.

Overall, concluded BeDuhn, the New World Translation “is one of the most accurate English translations of the New Testament currently available” and “the most accurate of the translations compared.”—Truth in Translation: Accuracy and Bias in English Translations of the New Testament.

BeDuhn noted, too, that many translators were subject to pressure “to paraphrase or expand on what the Bible does say in the direction of what modern readers want and need it to say.”

On the other hand, the New World Translation is different, observed BeDuhn, because of “the greater accuracy of the NW as a literal, conservative translation of the original expressions of the New Testament writers.”

Other scholars agree; that's just one example.

As for me, I have personally compared the words and phrases of the NWT with such sources as Vine's Lexicon of Old Testament and New Testament Words, as well as Strong's Concordance. I have found it to be very accurate.

I have also compared other translations, and find that they follow the same rules as the NWT EXCEPT in matters that disagree with their theology. EXAMPLE: NWT adds "a" to John 1:1c; "a god." Many others do not. However, Greek grammar is identical in Acts 28:4 where it says literally, "murderer is the man."

The KJV and others add the "a" here so that it reads "man is a murderer" as does the NWT.

The most accurate thing about the NWT is the restoration of the divine Name where most translations have replaced it with the title "LORD" or GOD" in all uppercase (usually) letters.

The NWT renders the Hebrew word יהוה (YHWH; Yahweh) into the English as "Jehovah." (See KJV at Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18; Isaiah 12:2; 26:4)

If the NWT is not the best, it is definitely one of the best and most accurate.

First you are not the first to tell the falsehood that the NWT was translated to match our beliefs. It was translated to be as close to the originals as possible, and those are what our beliefs are based on, so naturally it would more closely match our beliefs than would those that are translated based to match the erroneous beliefs of trinitarians and others.

One other point, RE: Zecheriah 12:10 - funny how people like to point out the way we translate that verse; NWT is "the One" and others say "me." However, they NEVER point out that the apostle John translates it very similar to the way we do. Note this from the KJV of John 19:37 -- "And again another scripture saith, 'They shall look on >> him << whom they pierced.'"

Did you see that? "Him;" not "me."

The New World Translation is unique in one thing – it is the first intentional, systematic effort at producing a complete version of the Bible that is edited and revised for the specific purpose of agreeing with a group's doctrine.

It is a cult document not a reliable bible

That's the JW translation..

Best is the King James version or the Amplified. Many modern translations are taking Jesus the Son of God out and calling Him a prophet instead in deference to Islam. Some are replacing Israel with church. Also the virgin birth is taken out and replaced with young woman instead of virgin. Too many blasphemous changes in the new translations. I wouldn't trust them.

The NWT translation is not a good translation. It has changed the text to suit its own theological bias in many places.

For example : Gen. 1:1-2 - "In [the] beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth proved to be formless and waste and there was darkness upon the surface of [the] watery deep; and God's active force was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters," (New World Translation, emphasis added).

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society denies that the Holy Spirit is alive, the third person of the Trinity. Therefore, they have changed the correct translation of "...the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters," to say "...and God's active force was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters."

Zech. 12:10 - In this verse God is speaking and says, "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son" (Zech. 12:10, NASB).

The Jehovah's Witnesses change the word "me" to "the one" so that it says in their Bible, "...they will look upon the one whom they have pierced..."

Since the Jehovah's Witnesses deny that Jesus is God in flesh, then Zech. 12:10 would present obvious problems--so they changed it.

John 1:1 - They mistranslate the verse as "a god." Again it is because they deny who Jesus is and must change the Bible to make it agree with their theology. The Jehovah's Witness version is this: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god."

Col. 1:15-17 - The word "other" is inserted 4 times. It is not in the original Greek, nor is it implied. This is a section where Jesus is described as being the creator of all things. Since the Jehovah's Witness organization believes that Jesus is created, they have inserted the word "other" to show that Jesus was before all "other" things, implying that He is created.

There are two Greek words for "other": heteros, and allos. The first means another of a different kind, and the second means another of the same kind. Neither is used at all in this section of scripture. The Jehovah's Witness have changed the Bible to make it fit their aberrant theology.

Heb. 1:6 - In this verse they translate the Greek word for worship, proskuneo, as "obeisance." Obeisance is a word that means to honor, show respect, even bow down before someone. Since Jesus, to them, is created, then he cannot be worshiped. They have also done this in other verses concerning Jesus, i.e., Matt. 2:2,11; 14:33; 28:9.

Heb. 1:8 - This is a verse where God the Father is calling Jesus God: "But about the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.'" Since the Jehovah's Witnesses don't agree with that they have changed the Bible, yet again, to agree with their theology. They have translated the verse as "...God is your throne..." The problem with the Jehovah's Witness translation is that this verse is a quote from Psalm 45:6 which, from the Hebrew, can only be translated as "...Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom." To justify their New Testament translation they actually changed the OT verse to agree with their theology, too!

The New World Translation and "Proskuneo" (worship)

This work was produced by the New World Translation Bible (NWT) committee in accordance with the Watchtower organization. An interlinear is a word-for-word translation of the Greek text. Of the eight Bibles i have it is the most accurate. I checked it out when a relative gave me one a couple years ago.

I used several lexicons and diaglotts to check it out.

And it is theeasiest to read and understand.

Wait for Dan Brown's edition. It will be the best for an eternity.
