I got an email from a college that said that they will give me a free application to their school (i wont have to pay 35 or 40 dollars to apply to the school) Is this real?

Yes. A lot of schools will allow people who have previously expressed interest to apply for free.

So long as it's a real school, that offer may be real, yes. Some schools do that to encourage certain types of students to apply (students outside their area, students whose test scores look good, etc.)
