Is not being able to name modern pop songs a sign of getting old?
I'm only 26 but feel a little out of touch with pop music. I can probably only name half of the artists in the chart right now. Is that a sure sign that I am getting old?
Mrwizard: That wasn't really modern but I could name the band and song.

I do hope not. My father was 48 when I was born and went round the house singing the music hall (vaudeville) songs of his youth, circa 1898-1930. I can still remember dozens of them. One, the "Galloping Major" was featured in a BBC program celebrating (I cannot remember why) all the events of 1906. Post 1930, I remember a pop song of 1935 because someone was playing it when I witnessed an awful road accident. After this there were various contemporary stories of female fans behaving outrageously when Sinatra and Elvis and the Beatles first became famous, but otherwise my life has been a complete musical blank. I only remember the Spice Girls because one had a relative with the same name as a close friend of mine. Oh and the Rolling Stones and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and that is about it. I always say that the only decent music was written for ladies and gentlemen to live listening in their drawing rooms. Once you opened music up to the bourgeoisie in concert halls, it just had to get louder to fill the hall (why poor Beethoven went deaf). Real music, alas, ended with Haydn and Mozart. But ask me about something interesting: the economy or world politics or even aircraft design, and I remain tully up to date.
Source(s): I admit to liking Gilbert and Sullivan but that's because of Gilbert's lyrics, not Sullivan's background noise. - HandymanLv 68 years ago
Honestly, I think that's pretty common. Once I left my 20's behind, I probably couldn't, either. When I was a kid, I could name every song in the top forty and the artists, and probably who wrote the song. I could also name every television show and what time and what network it was on (of course there were only three or four networks back then, lol). Since then, someone will ask me "do you like so-and-so?" and I have to say "I don't know, what song do they do?" And I'm talking about some pretty big artists, too. Just ceased to care as much, I guess.

No, it doesn't mean that you're getting old. There's just such a bombardment of music hitting the airwaves these days...various styles and artists, cross-over this and that...I can't imagine ANYONE keeping it all straight.
I'm a boomer and I like my oldies. Especially good R & B. But I'll hear pop music here and there, and certain songs/artists stand out to me for one reason or another. I happen to like Adele, Bruno Mars and Mumford and Sons. Then again, play me some Andrea Boccelli and my heart melts.
I think that because there's just so much these days, we just center in on what we like and what catches our fancy. So no, it doesn't mean that you're getting old!

I know that it is true for me. Most of my favorite artists are either dead or no longer performing. I have no clue about the current chart artists or any of the different genres that are in vogue. I just like the music - much older music - that I do hear on Youtube or Pandora of music from thru the 40s & prior to the mid 80s.
Enjoy whatever you enjoy - music has so much to offer to sooth the soul. new, old, pop or classical, acoustic or electric ... enjoy & have a good life.

a little - when i was 26 I was out travelling the world, returned to start a business and continue travelling the world, and missed a lot of the current music for the next 30 years or so - i guess you could call it maturity, having better things to do - retired in Thailand now and do personally know some of the counter culture music heros here, would not know Beyone from Rihana, and it does not bother me in the least.

No. If you're like me then you haven't had any interest in "modern pop songs" for the past 50 years.

I just don't listen to the new music, anything after 1984 I have no interest in.
I listen to Sirius XM, for 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s and Elvis!

If that is a measure of old age I have been old all my life. I never did know the name of any song or the performer either.

No it just means your starting to enjoy a better taste in music, although I will admit I do still like most hard rock, and of course classic rock,
