Again, what exactly is the difference between "faith" and "wishful thinking"?

I ask again because only one person had the intellectual honesty to answer this question the first time.

"Wishful thinking" - deals with expectations, wishes of "it" (whatever it might be) may (an iffy statement, indeed) become true.

On the other side "Faith" is "the ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY OF THINGS EXPECTED, THE REALITIES COME TRUE, ALTHOUGH NOT PERCEIVED" by all people.

This partakes knowledge acquired concerning "these expectations" (not just wishes, ambiguous statements). Then there is the "understanding" of these expectations. Understanding is a fruit (like an Apple) which a gift from God, the ultimate Spiritual power, our Creator, Designer, etc)

In the surface, people may confuse both, specially if you haven't got a trained 'eye' to see these differences. You do NOT put your life on the line for a 'wishful thinking', though.

I wish that I had my own wings and could fly like a bird, but I don't have much faith that this will happen for me.

I have faith in God, but I don't have to wish for Him.

Justifying belief in God requires faith. Logically justifying being an atheist demands the wishful thinking that mankind will always find a solution to his contemporary problems and eventually produce a utopian state.

  • Hebrews 11:1--Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld.

So faith is a belief based on evidence, no matter where that evidence leads.

Wishful thinking is believing in whatever you want to believe, even if the evidence leads to some other fact. For example, believing in evolution despite the fact that even LEGITIMATE science (meaning that science that follows its own rules and the scientific method) has never proven evolution, and in fact has disproven sizable portions of it.

faith is trusting in something based on evidence

i have faith, trust, i will see the sun tomorrow since it has been there the past 54 years i have lived

i have faith, trust, the chair i am going to sit on will hold me since it has the past 500 times i sat in it

wishful thinking is wanting something to be true or happen

The way I understand it is that faith is following a gut feeling that has been supported in the past and not contradicted, while wishful thinking is more akin to hope, regardless of gut feeling and regardless of the contradictions it might face.

I think it's only the level of conviction.
