Who starts in net for Canada at the 2014 Olympic games?

I mean, Brodeur and Luongo have essentially played themselves off the roster. Fleury looks to be the lone returning stopper and I have a feeling he'll be joined by Carey Price. However both men have consistency issues and were not even mentioned as Vezina finalists. Could a game-stealer like Craig Anderson be called upon? Give me some insight!

Bonus Question(s):

Who starts in net for the Americans? Quick or Miller (or other)?

Who starts in net for the host Russians? Bobrovsky?

Marty-Broduer will be eighty at the time so he's out.

Lou-The canadians hate Luo, despite the fact that he is one hell of a goalie (just not too clutch), but being clutch in the Olympics is pivotal. Lou's out.

MAF-Ummm. NO. NO NO NO NO NO. Here are some examples of why he won't

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-cvU_g4aPA (fail vs Islanders 2013)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syeMLpY5gGA (fail vs flyers 2012)

Starter for Canada: Carey Price-He seems like the man to beat at this point. In my mind, He'll be the starter.

Backup 1 for Canada: Corey Crawford- He's been great this season. It may just be because he has a great team ahead of him though.

Backup 2 for Canada: I think it will go to Lou. He'll probably have a great year next year not for the Canucks.

    America:

Starter: Jonathan Quick- I am pretty sure about this one.

Backup 1: Craig Anderson-Had a great year. Very consistent. Should be on the team.

    Backup 2: Jimmy Howard.

    Russia:

Starter: Bob. Definitely Bobrovsky, so much better than Bryz.

Backup 1: BryzgaLOLov. I'm a flyers fan. I can say it.

    Backup 2: ?

    Sweden:

    Starter: Hank

    Backup 1: Fasth

    Backup 2: Jhonas Enroth

    Finland: Pekka Rinne

    Backup 1: Antii Niemmi

Backup 2: Tuuka Rash (This is probably the most depth trio of goalies in the world)

    Switzerland:

    Starter: Jonas Hiller

    Czech Republic:

    Starter: Ondrej Pavelec

    Backup 1: Tomas Vokoun

    Slovakia:

    Starter: Jaroslav Halak

    Backup 1: Peter Budaj

Since the Olympics are next year if the NHL is going Team Canada has it's work cut out for it.

Two years ago the picks would have been Price, Fleury, Smith and Ward as front runners. This year all four faltered somewhere along the way. The top two had the wins but showed feet of clay in save percentage and pressure situations. Coming to the front this year were Crawford, Reimer and Holtby.

My guess is that Price, Crawford and Fleury are the initial picks with Reimer and Holtby slotted as able replacements if these fail again early in 2013-14.

USA simple Quick, Anderson, and Howard

Russia First picks Bobrovsky, Barulin, Koshechkin, or Vasilevski. Only one of which is in the NHL

Craig Anderson was born in Illinois... So to answer your bonus question, the USA has a pretty good selection for goalies... I don't see how you don't put Quick first in line though. He basically won his team the Stanley Cup and most of the time in big games he looks like a wall out there. I would put him first and Anderson as back up. Miller has done nothing special as of late to warrant a number one or two spot. He has been mediocre at best, hell even Cory Schneider is a better option than Miller judging by recent performance. Between Anderson and Quick, I don't see how you could go wrong, both are top notch goalies.

I think you are right though, I don't see too many other options besides possibly Crawford or Emery, both from Chicago. Canada is so talented outside of goal though that even mediocre goalies can shine on that team so they shouldn't have too much to worry about.

As far as the russians go, I think Bryzgalov will be the number one and Bobrovsky will be back up solely based on experience. Bryzgalov and Varlamov were the goalies for the world championships so that could be a sign of what's to come to.

Crawford, Ward, Price, Reimer Fleury, Smith, Holtby. Will be 3 of those, considering Canada's olympic team is basically an all star team Canada has never needed amazing goalies, only capable goalies. With a stacked offence better than any other team and a solid D, Canada as always has a great chance to win the gold with any goalie in net.

  • Fleury is god-awful. He's currently riding the pine for Pittsburgh. His playoff stats are horrible if you go by SPCT (which you should- he has a career SPCT of .904 in the playoffs; he is incapable of stealing a game for you).

Craig Anderson is American (from the Chicago suburbs).

Luongo, right now, would be my pick as a starter (if he finds a team and puts together a good regular season). Your backups? Throw Cam Ward (if he's healthy), Carey Price, James Reimer, Corey Crawford, and Braden Holtby in a pot and pick 2. I'd shy away from Price right now because of his injury (six months from now could be different).

If I was running USA hockey, I'd have Quick, Anderson, and Ryan Miller pencilled in (in that order) with Jimmy Howard on standby.

Much as I hate to say it...the Americans are MUCH better off in net.

Honestly, I think Mike Smith should start. Fleury is a horrible playoff goalie and that might carry over to the Olympics so I wouldn't have him on the team. Price can be a superb goalie some nights but horrible others but I think he can concentrate if it's the Olympics. I'd put Luongo as the third string goalie for experience.

I think for Canada, it is incredibly close.

Here are my top picks, and who I would invite to camp, then have them fight it out.

    Cam Ward (Car)

    Mike Smith (Phnx)

    Corey Crawford (Chi)

    James Reimer (Tor)

I think Crawford and Reimer would have an advantage, because they have both played in tough, high pressure environments (Chicago and Toronto), where the goalies have a ton of pressure.

    Americans- probably Quick

Russians- could be anyone from Khabibulin, Nabokov, Varlamov or Bobrovski.

    Sweden- Lundqvist

Finland- could be anyone from Backstrom, Rinne, Rask or Niemi

    Czech Republic- Pavelic and Vokoun

    Switzerland- Hiller

Slovakia- Budaj and Halak (as a Leafs fan I laugh)

There is talk of Jimmy Howard of the Red Wings playing for the USA, and if he wins the Stanley cup for Detroit that talk will just get louder. But I admit he is a dark horse candidate at this point.

As for Canada, there is a good chance that Babcock will be the coach again, and I believe who starts in goal will be his decision. However, I have no idea who he would favor at this point. I imagine he would wait until less than a month before the first game, and base his decision on recent play.

Craig Anderson is American, and I can see him starting for the US. At this point, whomever has a great early season in the NHL next fall could be the starter-so it could be someone who isn't an obvious choice at this point. Who knows, Luongo could play brilliantly for his new team.

If you ask Tyler and the rest of Boston it would be that SOB goalie on the Leafs, he was so freaking stingy. I don't know much about him but it was an amazing job most of the series. I know he was good because he made me so freaking angry.
