Why is what the IRS did wrong?
Sincere question here... I am not trying to make a statement and I fully admit ignorance.
Before this IRS/TEA party issue came out, I would have thought the IRS would have been OBLIGATED to seek out political groups that they thought would be likely to evade taxes. I do understand that people from the left and right are saying that what they did was wrong. But I do not understand why this is so.
Thanks in advance.
David F: you might be right, because I still don't get it.
I did not know that about released information to democrat campaign operatives.
Samantha: It would help more if you said WHY that is the case.
Thank you IceT: That is the most cogent explanation I've heard so far. But if the IRS thought these groups would be more likely to evade taxes (as their overt mission states) why not subject them to extra scrutiny? It would seem the most reasonable thing to do.
I see what you're saying Jeff D but it does seem (from my biased perspective) that those conservative organizations ARE on the verge of wanting to break the law (I believe the same about left-wing groups like Green Peace as well). Look at what so many gun advocates have planned for July 4th in DC. They seem to be saying that "we will not pay taxes we do not want to" rather than just saying "we think taxes are fair but just don't want to see them raised.
I would think it is the JOB DESCRIPTION of the IRS to target groups like that (to give them equal scrutiny would seem foolish).
As for freedom, they can still say what ever they like on the issue. But let's not pretend that whatever we say should have no consequences. That is why we watch Green Peace with a careful eye.

The organizations who had Liberal sounding names were granted tax exempt status in just months. Those with conservative sounding names were granted tax exempt status in 3 years! After they had been illegally asked for donor lists and various other questions! Also the IRS illegally gave the tax records of people opposed to the regime to organizations friendly to the regime, such as Propublica.

The Tea Party advocates lower taxes and limited government, but it doesn't advocate evading taxes or breaking the law. Therefore, there was no reason to target them.
If saying that my taxes are too high automatically makes me a suspect, then we no longer live in a free country.

Because they targeted only groups that sounded like were conservative and released information about those groups to democrat campaign operatives.

If they have been doing anything wrong it's not investigating every application for a tax free political group more thoroughly. I don't mind paying my taxes so why should they get a pass.

All it is:
A giant smoke screen so rich republicans will not have to pay taxes.
The question is,the question that will NEVER be answered; Was there tax evasion.
The tea party will keep on screaming "DISCRIMINATION" until all attention and red tape covers up the fact that they were cheating on their taxes.

Why is punishing conservative groups by withholding to the point of said groups refunds okay?
If this happened in the reverse there would be hell to pay.

It is wrong because it violates the constitution of the United States
