Southwest lets passengers choose their own seats, but only after boarding each flight, it's because this airline has an open seating policy. The Airline issues boarding passes each with a number starting from A1-A60, B1-B60, C1..... Passengers would make 2 lines at the gate and board according to their boarding number. The earlier one boards, the more seats the passenger can choose from. Priority is given to full fare ticket holders and their elite frequent flyers. Some passengers like to pay extra $12.50 each way for "EarlyBird" to get an earlier boarding position. The rest is first come first serve. Therefore most SW passengers check in as soon as the 24 hour limit is up so as to get good positions.

Another thing you might check at least 12-24 hours in advance is to find out if your flight is still leaving on schedule because of weather, flights taking off at the same time, etc.
