My boss told me that I need to park my car backwards so customers cant see my gay rights bumper magnet?

Is it illegal? He told me "he doesn't want customers seeing that queer ****." He was completely rude about it, and said if I am working for him I will not have that on my car and if I do, I am to park backwards so customers cannot see it. By the way, I am a waitress.

Update:

He said it exactly like that. He also throws away ANY applications black people turn in. WHICH I KNOW IS ILLEGAL.

Update 2:

It is my freedom of speech, and my right. He is homophobic, he says constantly he hates 'fags.' & like I said, he will not accept applications from a black person. He cannot make me take it off, the car is MY property. Also, I forgot to add that after he said all that to me, I looked out and the bumper magnet was off my car and by the dumpster. It is illegal for him to take it off without my permission!

    Of course it is legal.

He has a right to control what is displayed on his property.

Yes, 100% legal. Your first amendment rights don't apply to private businesses. He has every right to not want something so divisive to be demonstrated out front of his business. I highly doubt he put it the way you did, but even if he did, that's bigoted and rude, but not illegal.

You now have the choice of what you want more, to display your gay rights decal or if you want to keep paying your bills. Choose wisely.

EDIT: Wow, people really don't know the law if they think this is in any way illegal. What law did he break, exactly?

EDIT #2: And the people who own the business have their own first amendment rights, which include not having to keep people hired who display messages that potentially hurt their business, or even messages they just personally don't like.

You're right, your boss is a homophobe, but that's legal. And you're also right that he can't force you to take it off your car, since it's YOUR property. Unfortunately for you, the parking lot is THEIR property and THEIR payroll, so they can legally fire you for your bumper sticker, but not make you take it off. The same thing that makes it illegal to force you take off the bumper sticker is what makes it legal for them to fire you for having it.

Btw, the BEST you could hope for in this situation is some bad PR for the business and you get to collect unemployment. You have no damages worthy of any lawsuit though. Please learn the law before you start shouting about your rights and what is and isn't illegal since you're clearly uninformed.

by having that on your car you could be driving away customers

as long as you are happy losing your job because he is losing customers

it's ok to leave it there

be cool there is no need to make politically correct statements 24/7

it is his property and his business and while he may not be homophobic many customers might be

is it that hard to not wave the flag when you are at work?

Turn your car around, and put the sticker on the front! LOL

Get a rainbow lanyard, and hang that from your mirror when you're parked.

Let him fire you.. Then sue for damages.

That is entirely unacceptable... is it illegal... thats borderline.. im not knowledgeable enough with the laws to determine that However I know that its extremely offensive.. Sometimes in certain jobs you have to kinda put up with **** like that if you want to keep your job. However me personally I wouldn't accept that.. its just how i am. I would go above him and explain it to someone higher if it bothers you that much. its absolutely discrimination in my opinion...by the comment he made... He didn't even ask respectfully. Not was he in anyway professional. Id suggest pick your battles... you could go above him but keep in mind that could have consequences.. if it just annoyed you then id suggest dealing with it... if it offends you id go above him for sure. Best of luck..

I'm not sure if it is legal but it would be better for his buisness because many people hate gays.

wow, report it, cause a scene and embarrass him, but if you need the money and cant find a job then secretly report him. Maybe record him on camera saying it again then post it to youtube!

He has no legal right to ask you to do this.
