Is there a helicopter (or similar) that can hold 100 people (or equivalent)?

I'm trying to work out logistics for a possible story involving zombies with a hive mind. But, inclusion in the hive mind depends on distance. I'm trying to figure out if there is a logistically reasonable way for the hive to gather new members without exposing themselves unduly to ambush from potentially hostile forces. What I'd like to do is have them have a helicopter or similar that can 1. hold 100 people-sized objects (they don't need to be able to sit comfortably or anything, they can be stacked like logs if necessary, but they all need to be there), and 2. fly at a walking pace, less than one mile from the ground. This would let the hive fly to a zombie outbreak, then lead the new zombies away, without having to land in what might be an ambush.

Is there such a helicopter or plane? If not, what is the smallest number of helicopters (or similar) that could accomplish the job, and what model or type would work best? Anything else I need to know?

Update:

I know there are large cargo planes, but are there either large cargo *helicopters*, or cargo planes that can fly that slowly?

Update 2:

A helicopter that the US government would have would be preferred, as that's who the zombies will be demanding it from.

Sounds like there are various helicopters that could easily handle 50 people, but handling 100 in one go is pushing it for most or all of them. But 2 copters should work fairly well.

Update 3:

Zaphod: why do you think I'm *asking* this question, if not to *learn more about the topic* before I write about it?

The only helicopter that I'm aware of that could carry that many was Russian. The MI-12. Only 2 prototypes were ever made. Both are now in museums.

The larger helicopters would then be a CH-47 Chinook (up to 55 troops), the V-22 Osprey (up to 24 troops), or the Mi-8 (up to 30 troops).

One thing that might be feasible if you aren't trying to fit them comfortably as you mentioned, would be a Sikorsky Sky Crane with a sea van slung under it. I have included a link to one carrying a connex. Other than that, you're sort of out of luck with a helicopter.

An airplane would be much more feasible for people. Lot's of passenger airplanes can carry in excess of 100 people. Freighters can carry even more if safety isn't an issue.

Did you mean to assert, certainly they are not able to have an ejector seat, i am hoping... They would but you'd be ejected proper into the rotors and cut to ribbons. Helicopters do not in most cases have escape aspects, however not like planes, if your chopper is in difficulty you can simply open the door and soar out, unless you're the pilot, where case you may need to get it to autohover first. There is a approach for saving a chopper that loses its engine though, it can be referred to as autorotation. The pilot idles the rotors and the chopper descends, and the force of the air from the descent makes the rotor flip. It doesn't provide carry drive nevertheless it does slow the descent with the aid of introducing an detail of drag to it. It acts form of like a parachute. I used to be in a chopper that did a rolling touchdown once, on a wildland firefighting crew in the Cascade range. The engine started backfiring and the pilot headed us into a tremendous flat field where we landed with a heavy thud. It was once a lot like an out-of-fuel airplane coasting in to land. We had a excellent pilot. <> concerning the Kamov's, there's most effective 12 of them in existence, lovely highly-priced... But yeah, just a few choppers do have disposable rotors. Ka-50's are an mighty chopper, they don't want a tail rotor. They can fireplace on the identical special goal at the same time turning round in circles. Luxurious though.

What about a Zeppelin (think the Hindenburg)?

The main feature of Zeppelin's design was a rigid light-alloy skeleton, made of rings and longerons. The advantage of this design was that the aircraft could be much larger than non-rigid airships. The framework of most Zeppelins were made of duralumin.

    Speaking of the Hindenburg:

    Cruising Speed: 76 MPH

    Maximum Speed: 84 MPH

Crew: 40 flight officers and men, 10-12 stewards and cooks

    Passengers: 72

The Russian Mi-26 is the most powerful helicopter in the world, stronger than any chinook that people here are suggesting. Id the people are there like sardines, it shouldn't be a problem.

The CH-53K has a payload of 35,000 pounds and can carry up to 55 soldiers and their equipment

Edit: That's 55 soldiers with full backpacks and weapon loads, 100 people could pile into it, as long as they averaged less than 350 pounds each!

    Zombies are imaginary

So perhaps you could easily invent a giant helicopter to hold even 200 people.

  • MI-26 is in all payload aspects, a helicopter C-130.

when it had been shotdown near Grozny, there were 127 fatalities

and no, no one would be walking underneath it.. living or undead.

Chinook or super puma are the only ones I can think of that could take the pay load. Not sure whether they are certified to carry 100 pax though.Rotary wing isn't my thing.

    No.
