Post defense for short player?

Hi,

I'm a point guard and about 5'8 tall.I'm 18 years old.

In the games, I guard full grown men.

The other teams point guards are about 6'2 or so.

Since I'm too short, they all post me up.

I am fairly strong, but since I'm too short, I can't stop them.

This is also the only way I can get scored on, because I am quick and strong(they cant dribble past me)

But they do this all game, which leads to me getting subbed, because I can't stop my man.

So what should I do to stop it?

Like AndyKatz said, using different strategies is your best bet. Knowing when to front is crucial. Never front if you have no one to help you or else they will just lob it over you and he will have an open lay up. Learn when to front, side front, and how to pull the chair. Basically play denial as much as you can. Another note, learn how to get tricky. learn how to lean on them and push them out of the paint before they catch the ball. Learn how to use your elbows to mess with their balance without getting caught (you should really just use your hips, but an elbow here and there can't hurt). Other than that, hit the weights and get a strong base so you can hold your own.

I am a heavily undersized Power Forward at 6'1", the dudes I defend are all around 6'6" (I play in Germany, there are not as many tall people in Basketball as in the US of course) so maybe I can give you some advice. First, it is very important to find out your opposing players strong side to which he will go in most of the cases, if you know that it will become much easier positioning yourself.

With that in mind you can try to go for a steal when he tries to go into shooting position but without gambling too much and leaving him space to drive to the hoop. If he shoots a Fadeaway or a Hookshot there is no hope to block his shot, so don't even try to go for it as it will just lead to an unnecessary foul, instead just try to get a hand into his face and block his sight.

  • Other than lifting weights and getting stronger, I would just use multiple strategies, i.e. front them one time, or pull the chair on them; just be constantly in motion and don't allow them to get familiar with where you are in relation to them. I'd recommend watching videos of Scottie Pippen defending much bigger post players.
