Libs and Cons: Do you honestly believe the government has your best interests at heart?

This is a serious question.

I have made it no secret that I am a Conservative - but honestly - do Libs and some Cons actually believe that the government is holding citizen interests above their own interests? I have seen so many people attack/defend politicians on Y!A but it raises the question: Do you actually believe in these people?

Update:

@ ..

I am conservative partly BECAUSE I do not trust the government. I am conservative on principal, but it seems at every election I am forced to choose the "lesser of two evils" rather than a candidate I truly support.

I do not hold all of the traditional conservative values aside from decentralization, lower corporate tax rate, immigration policies, welfare reform, and flat/no-income tax.

I have noticed that Libs are also forced to make the same decision I am forced to, picking the best of two or three bad candidates in some cases.

    Most people are self interested.

That's why we need to decentralize the Federal Government.

Barry hates this country. Learn his e-book. George Sorros is behind just about the whole lot Barry does. Principal change approach Redistribution of wealth. Appear at the oil spill. When gasoline and diesel are $6 a gallon it will shut down our financial system. Barry and George are giving 2 billion bucks to Brazil (our money) to finance THEIR deep-sea oil drilling and then Barry places a moratorium on our drilling. Keep an eye on the cost of produce. Produce is a time-scensitive commodity. It have got to be trucked in. The fee of fuel will push all prices of goods and services of the core classification to a point where we can no longer be core we will be able to be poor. Actual poor. Those of us within the middle type are 70% of the economic climate and as we go so goes the nation.

    I'm neither lib nor con.

So, no. That's a large part of the reason why.

Though, compared to you, I see the GOP as one of the more insidious offenders of using the government to prop up the interests of their backers more-so than looking out for the best interests of the American people.

They're particularly bad in my eyes since their actions have been in direct opposition to their rhetoric for decades.

No but neither do Corporations, but they serve our interest anyway for much the same reasons. They want to keep their jobs and win re election and to do that they need us to vote for them which is not much different than firms who want to sell their stuff to us to make a profit. Depending on people to act in the own self interest is more reliable that depending on altruism and if the intuitions of government have the right rules and regular elections it works.

No, I don't believe the state is primarily concerned with my interests. I believe the state is primarily concerned with the interests of corporations. But only insofar as those interests further those of the state. I know that is circular, but it's intended to be, as I believe the two to have a symbiotic (if occasionally antagonistic) relationship.

Ditto with the vast majority of politicians. Although, I am sure there are sincere politicians on all sides, I would wager that they are few in number and tend to be local.

Nope. Their total interest is in getting re-elected and votes or votes for their party [like Obama now]. Nothing else.

I think that the majority of polit politicians try and do their job in an honest way, but power is so corrupting, and, depending on the system, corruption can be incentivised or made easier.
