Or can be made out of any cloth, to be defined as a cardigan?

A cardigan needs to be made out of a knitted fabric -any fiber will work -to be a cardigan. If it's made out of woven fabric then it's a cardigan styled jacket and not a true cardigan. The original cardigans were hand knitted but now they can be made of machine knitted fabrics as well. The fiber content isn't as important -any fiber can be knitted and turned into a cardigan.

Link didn't work. You are in general no longer going to be able to make this scale down enough to make a change in how it suits. Polyester doesn't lessen, that is one of the most explanations they use it.
