How Can I Take my Rats to the Vet?
Well, as most of you can tell by now, my two rats are sick. They are constantly sneezing and they both have wet noses. This has been going on for quite a while now. I just discovered a small amount of porphyrin around one of my rat's nose. I know these are signs of illness in rats.
Now, here's the problem. I am only a thirteen year old girl. My mom, the only one who can take my rats to the vet, thinks they are perfectly healthy. She doesn't realize how bad this can be if left untreated. I've tried and tried, but my mom refuses to spend money on something she thinks isn't important. Every time I bring it up, she laughs, rolls her eyes, and murmurs 'not this again'. I'm getting very frustrated now. I can't watch my rats suffer for something that can easily be treated by one trip to the vet.
So, my question is, how can I convince my mom that we need to take my rats to the vet? What can I say that has even the slightest chance of changing her mind? Anything will help. I'm getting very desperate to help my rats.
If all else fails, what are some ways I can make the money myself? If I have the money, my mom shouldn't care how I spend it. The problem is, like I said, I'm a thirteen year old girl. I can't get a job. What are some ways kids my age can make some money?
If you have any other advice, I would love to hear about it.
Thank you so much for reading! I'm really worried about my rats, and I will do anything to help them.
Thank you, Larka, that really helps. And yes, I'm sure it is a respiratory problem. They are currently using fleece as bedding, and their cage is cleaned every week or two. So dust really shouldn't be a problem. Obviously my mom doesn't know much about rat care. So she, my grandpa, and my dad (whenever they are over) tend to smoke around my rats when I'm not around to stop them. I just wish they would listen for once. Anyways, thank you again! You were a great help!
Thank you for your help, Boss.
I'm going to be honest, Madison. I just don't care. I'll live in a box eating only McDonald's for the rest of my life. As long as my rats are safe. I know rats don't live long anyways, but that's not the point. I want my rats to be able to live their whole entire lifespan healthily and happily. I'll do whatever it takes to help them. Thanks for your help, anyways!
Jasmine, may I ask you how they got sick? What about the fleece caused problems? Anyways, thanks for helping! I really appreciate it!

How long have they been sneezing? Also have you listened to their lungs? Do they sound crackly or whooshy at all? Are they making any kind of monkey (wheezing) sounds at all?
Firstly i agree with the other poster call an exotics vet and have THEM tell your mom how serious respiratory infections are in rats. If you can't do that, try telling her that rats have extremely delicate respiratory systems and URI's do NOT get better without medication. They will get worse and worse, until they eventually succumb to it and that by refusing them medical treatment she's not allowing you to be responsible. It's not ok for her to allow them to suffer, maybe try asking how shed feel if she had bronchitis and no-one would take her to the doctor to get medication for it and she was left to suffer alone at home.
Secondly there are people who might be able to help, go to the rat shack forum (link in source box) and see if there's anyone there in your area who'd be willing to help you. (most of them are amazing and always willing to do something to help in these kinds of situations)
Thirdly you could offer to do house work/chores to earn money, see if you can convince your mom to help you earn the money that way.
Also just to throw in if you can get them into a vet they need Baytril and Doxycycline for 21 days (cat/dog vets might tell you ten days but rats need it for 21 days or the infection can easily come back).
Hope that helps
Good luck

Why don't you call the vet and get them to tell your mum how serious this could be. If not show her a video or post somewhere that explains the seriousness of this.
There's not many ways a young girl your age can get money, but there are some jobs you could do. Babysitting and paper rounds are some options that usually offer good pay.
Otherwise do jobs around the house and in return your mum could offer money.
But bear in mind this will take a while to save up.
Also make sure your rats are actually ill. It might not be as serious as it seems and could be easily resolved by changing the bedding or cleaning the cage more often. Make sure your litter and bedding is dust free.
But if this fails and they have a respiratory infection then a trip to the vet is needed so make sure you do convince your mum.

I had a dumbo rat that used to get respiratory infections very easily. Look up an exotic animal vet- other than Banfield, every vet that saw my ratties there gave some crappy answer and waved their hand away... Anyways, call said vet, hear what they have to say and ask them to talk to your mum. Emphasize how important they are to you and the fact that you are afraid to lose them because of something as simple as giving them a bit of cephlexin or amoxacillain (The two meds my ratties were always perscribed) which only cost about $10.
Another thing, when I tried using fleece as bedding for my rats, they always got sick, maybe not right away, but within a month or two. I always use "Yesterday's News" it's a cat litter made up entirely of organic, non-harmful inks and old newspaper, that make no dust and is very inexpensive. I buy the big bag of it at walmart for $15 and it can last me up to 3ish months in the four story ferret cage I have them in :)
Next, make sure you are changing their water every day. Try giving more lettuce and grapes, mine like apples and diving for frozen peas (Take a paint tray, add water and frozen peas, add rats and enjoy!) as a bi-weekly snack and the yogurt chips from Walmart that are 2 dollars or so. In other words, give as many fresh veggies and some fruits as possible to help strengthen their immune system. I make the Rattattats recipe from here for mine all the time and they love it! ( http://whitney05.hubpages.com/hub/Homemade-Rat-Die... ) So far Morgan is 3, Billy is 5, Lilly just passed at 7!, and Watson and Sherlock are both 2
Good luck!

A vet has to teach in all animals not just dogs and cats. Your vet would possibly not have noticeable many rats (although they are popular pets - i love them) nevertheless it does not imply to assert he in now not certified to care for them. I find it slightly a laugh that you just believe that your vet would not treat rats as you've only ever visible dogs and cats when you're there. How as a rule do you go in comparison to their opening instances? Even if you spent one hour there a week (assuming a 30 hr week) than is simplest 3.33% - what do you imagine they do for the other 96.Sixty seven% of the time?

All the other answers are good too, but my rats had to go back to the vet 5 times before they where cured and had to take three types of medicine for a month it also cost $200, so it's not like its going to be a one time situation also it can easily come back....
