Is it okay that in the Pledge of Allegiance, I don't say the line about god?

I'm not religious, and I feel hypocritical. I know it seems kind of silly, but it's something that really bothers me. It's not like I'm any less patriotic--that line was not there in the first place, and our country is not founded on any religion whatsoever. Of course, in formal situations I will say it to avoid disagreements, but like at school is it okay for me to just leave it out?

Did you know that you, as all of us Americans, have the Right to choose not to say it? If there's someone that punishes you for not saying it, or obligated to say so, can get many years of prison for taking your rights away? Honest truth.

-If you decide not to say it, just don't, and do what you stand for, what you believe in.

    Of course.

In fact you do not even have to say the Pledge in school. The Supreme Court has ruled on four separate occasions that public schools cannot compel a student to say the pledge, and it must be optional.

And you are correct. That line was added to the pledge in the 1950's in response to the "Red Scare," fear of communism.

The term "God" is a loose term really the question is what "God" are they talking about. Jehovah, Buddha Zeus... The assumption is that it means the biblical God. I slightly diisagree about this country being founded on religious beliefs. Maybe we don't follow them now but the whole point that America started was to flee religious persecution and be free to practice how ever the settlers wanted. Which in history we soon see the oppressed become the oppressor... Any way I'm super long winded... I say to each their own.

Nope you can do whatever you want its America. I used not say the whole pledge of Allegiance in school cuz this country changed since the pledge was made up.

i leave it out too. when we were learning the pledge in elementary school, the teacher even told us it's ok to leave it out if we're not religious.

but i do think it's weird that for a country who believes in "separation of church and state," every dollar bill has "in god we trust."

No. I don't say it either. Why say it if I'm not religious?

  • I don't even pledge anymore.
