Does science sound just as miraculous as magic and religion to believers?
What I mean is that numerous studies have shown that atheists on average have a much higher level of education attainment than religious people. And while atheists only make up 10-15% of the US population at large, they make up over 90% of the scientists holding advanced degrees in the US.
As a result, it is not uncommon for atheists to have a much higher degree of understanding in the sciences. So when people are talking about the origins of the universe, and atheists being up things like vacuum energy, quantum gravity, an the multiverse, do you think theists hear those phrases and due to a lack of science literacy just equate them with magic?
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality7 years agoHelp with creaking noise when climbing?
I am having a hard time identifying a creaking noise I get when climbing on my mountain bike. At first I thought it was coming from my bottom bracket, but now I am thinking it is coming from up front.
It might be the bars, stem, or fork. Maybe it is even in the wheels.
This only happens when I am seriously hammering on my bike on climbs and sprints. It is silent the rest of the time.
And suggestions on where to look?
3 AnswersCycling7 years agoWhat do you think of this quote?
The men who committed the atrocities of September 11 were certainly not “cowards,” as they were repeatedly described in the Western media, nor were they lunatics in any ordinary sense. They were men of faith –perfect faith, as it turns out – and this, it must finally be acknowledged, is a terrible thing to be.

6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality7 years agoPoll: Where do you fall on this scale?
Richard Dawkins proposed this scale of theistic probability that most people fall on. His thought was that theist/agnostic/atheist was too limiting of a description.
If you had to give yourself a number, where would you put yourself?
1. Strong theist. 100 per cent probability of God. In the words of C.G. Jung: "I do not believe, I know."
2. De facto theist. Very high probability but short of 100 per cent. "I don't know for certain, but I strongly believe in God and live my life on the assumption that he is there."
3. Leaning towards theism. Higher than 50 per cent but not very high. "I am very uncertain, but I am inclined to believe in God."
4. Completely impartial. Exactly 50 per cent. "God's existence and non-existence are exactly equiprobable."
5. Leaning towards Atheism. Lower than 50 per cent but not very low. "I do not know whether God exists but I'm inclined to be skeptical."
6. De facto atheist. Very low probability, but short of zero. "I don't know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there."
7. Strong atheist. "I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung knows there is one."
Dawkins also believed that there probably were very few atheists that would be an actual '7,' yet there were probably plenty of people that would consider them selves a 1.

You know, because gravity is just a theory.
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality7 years agoWhat is the correct way to ask a question in this forum?
From what I have read, it seems like the proper format is:
"Atheists: (insert statement here demonstrating a complete ignorance of a well understood scientific concept,) doesn't that prove the existence of (God/Allah/Leprechauns/etc..?)

2 AnswersWeddings8 years agoAnniversary Dinner pricing?
Does anyone have any idea how much dinner for two at the French Laundry will cost? I've seen their menu, but it changes every few weeks, and reservations are recommended 6 to 18 months in advance.
3 AnswersWeddings8 years agoIs it true that there are no atheists in foxholes?
Maybe there are only atheists in foxholes. If the faithful truly and fully believe in a protective deity, why would they dive into a foxhole to protect themseleves from the bullets whizzing by? A part of their brain knows damn well that if they do not protect themselves, the bullets will hardly discriminate between those who claim faith and those who reject it.

8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoAren't Colorado marijuana laws too strict?
The state just announced the new laws for selling recreation marijuana.
Not only are they going to be charging an extra 15% tax, but you will have to show an ID to prove you are 21. On top of that they are going to require that pot brownies carry an expiration date.
This is what happens when big government gets involved. In the past, I used to just page my "guy" and he would show up at the house. Now I will have to walk nearly three entire blocks to go to the pot store, and I will have to remember to bring my photo ID. Sure they will have 50 different varieties of weed, not to mention a vast selection of marijuana containing baked goods, but I think I am going to miss my dealer.
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics8 years agoIs Monday internet day in India?
I noticed Monday morning that all of the strange Kundali, genotype, arranged marriage, etc.. wedding questions show up on here. They show up all week, but Monday morning (North America) there seems to be a much higher percentage of them.
So my question is, does the internet in India get turned on Monday morning so everyone asks these questions at the same time?
1 AnswerWeddings8 years agoHelp with loose cassette on mountain bike?
The cassette on my mountain bike has a tiny amount of play in it. We are talking very small. I can wiggle the cassette on the freehub and the largest cog moves less than a millimeter.
I have checked to make sure that the hub bearing, the freehub body, and the cassette lockring are all adjusted properly. I also experimented with a spacer, but that didn't help either.
All I can think of is that the interface between the hub and the cassette just has too wide of a tolerance.
So my question is, will this get worse from riding? And is there anything I can do short of replacing the freehub and the cassette? It is a Mavic freehub and a Shimano XTR cassette, so both will be expensive to replace.
3 AnswersCycling8 years agoDo Christians place any value on human life?
Because based on the questions and answers here, most Christians see human life as nothing more than an entrance exam for the afterlife.
Doesn't that seem empty and meaningless?
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoGood replacement for Honda Element?
I have a Honda Element that I love. It is my second one, and I have about 125k on this one.
I would love to just buy another one, but it is no longer made. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?
I love the larger interior space for 4 bikes, the fold down seats, good gas mileage, and all wheel drive.

1 AnswerLesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender8 years agoDid you hear about the jerk CEO at Lane Bryant?
He/she said he refuses to make clothes for skinny people. Apparently they want to discriminate against skinny people and claim it is not their "demographic."
Where are all the protesters writing about what a jerk she is, just like everyone is complaining because Abercrombie & Fitch will only make clothes for skinny people?
