Did the western powers not think what would be happening in the future when aiding Japan in the Mieji Rstn?
Western powers were imperialistic in the 1800s, some of course which had colonies in Asia. What were they expecting turning Japan into another empire?

In a lot of cases they were thinking of making money in the short term, which then as now tends to cloud people's ability to think about the long term.
