Bowel problems after tonsillectomy?! Serious question, and serious answers only please!?
I am a 26 year oId female and had my tonsils and adenoids removed on 05-21-13. Surgery went well, and was able to go home that same afternoon. I went home and fell asleep for the rest of the afternoon, evening, night and almost the entire morning the next day (Wednesday) When I finally woke up, my throat was so swollen I couldn't even pass water or pain medications, I wasn't in too much pain so I decided to go without it (BAD). Thursday I woke up and couldn't stand the pain, dizziness and all over feeling of needing help. I went into the clinic and my regular doctor saw infection and recommended a shot, when they were about to give me the shot I almost passed out so then they decided that I need to be admitted in to the hospital for pain control and dehydration. During my stay I was given toradol (sp) through an IV for the pain and also liquid lortab. I was admitted for 2 and 1/2 days. Released on Saturday.
I haven't been able to eat much, tried to eat mash potatoes twice, MISTAKE my throat felt so dry afterward. So I stuck with what I could... jello, 1 small cup a day..(It was all I could), water intake was very low.. less than a bottle a day.
HERE IT GET GROSS
By Tuesday,(one week after the procedure) I felt the urge to use the bathroom, so I got up and tried, HORRIBLE it hurt so bad and was so dry I couldn't do it.(Apparently my narcotics made my stool hard) I started Mira-lax and a stool softener and some other items, but nothing helped. DR said that I had to push it out, and that it was possible that I would have tears. Finally this morning with tears and all, I was able to pass it... It was such a relief! But, then... I had a lot of stomach cramps and aches.Called the my DR and they added Maalox for the upset stomach she told me to continue with the Mira-lax and stool softeners. Well, after taking all that... my stomach is still felt full of cramps! And now, I have diarrhea! It's almost every 20 minutes and it went from being powdery to being completely clear. I am in a lot of pain, and want it to stop. DR said not to take anything to stop it because it all needs to come out, but I am so miserable... it burns when it comes out and I can not imagine what all is coming out seeing that I have only been able to take down 1 cup of jello per day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to making this more comfortable?
Please notice, I am not able to eat anything due to the surgery and apparently my scabs haven't even fallen off yet. :(
My throat still hurts, but I have stopped my lortab and decided to take liquid tylenol.
Please help, and no rude comments... as embarrassed as can be already, but I am just so desperate.

Don't be embarrassed! I went to the ER a week after a minor surgery because I was having severe stomach cramps, so they did a CT scan and the doctor came back in and told me that everything was good, I was just literally full of crap. THAT was humiliating!
It sounds just like the type of havoc that opiates can wreck on the stomach, so it's a good thing if you can do without them. I became addicted to them later so I've experienced what you are describing many times: constipation, and when you finally get it moving with the laxatives it doesn't stop. I know it hurts really bad, but your doctor is right, it needs to pass.
I've used Preparation H ointment to put on the area because it has a numbing effect on the skin. It would be better if you could get some real food in your stomach, but I understand you can't eat yet. Maybe you can get some kind of fiber-rich drink so your system will have something other than water to work with?
Good luck!

Oh, dear, that is so awful! You have my complete sympathy. Here are some thoughts:
1.) Please listen to "Place of Healing" by Sunrise Guided Visualizations (link below) and allow your mind to begin to direct your body to heal. And to manage pain. The power of the mind is amazing.
2.) Personally, I would not take the mira-lax, maalox, or other compounds. Each has its own side-effects. But I am not a doctor. I am much more inclined to watered-down fruit juices, plus clear broths and green soups. When you can get to a fruit smoothie with yogurt (with active cultures) so much the better!
3.) When your anus burns, put an ice cube there. And possibly some Vaseline or ointment.
4.) Ice might also be nice for your throat. I do not know -- but you will figure out what works for you.
Do not be embarrassed! This is what post-op is all about. You will be just fine!

Poor you, you have been through it. Your last drug, tylenol I would say that would make hard stools. I'm in England and our drug names are different so I don't know any you say here but and ending ...ol we have tramadol and cocodmol are opiates and make block you up. I would say take as few as you can and drink plenty and eat bran type foods. No eggs nor bananas they can bind you up. It does take 2 or 3 weeks for the pain to go. I would stay off the drugs that help you go as induced diarrhea won't help. I do wish you well and any day soon you will be feeling great again and all this will be gone.

If it's flirting and makes you feel uncomfortable, you should tell the brother he is crossing the line and making you feel uncomfortable. But once he crossed the line, the fiance needs to handle it. I wouldn't discuss it over the Christmas dinner, but in private. There is no use involving the rest of the family unless the fiance or his brother tells anyone.
