Alfred Hitchcock based his great "Psycho" loosely off of actual events of a midwest murderer.

NOTE

I noticed you received the response of "Fargo" from another contributor. It is a myth that "Fargo" is based on a true story. This myth comes from the Cohen Brothers intentional misleading remarks at the beginning of the movie stating that the events actually occurred, but the names were changed. The Cohen Brothers have admitted the entire story is fiction and they opened the movie with those remarks to make the movie more suspenseful and thrilling. It never happened.

And "From Hell" is very, very loosely based on what actually occurred in the Jack the Ripper murders. They took the story of Jack the Ripper and fabricated their own fantasy behind the murders.
