Used Hyundai elantra or ford focus?

I have a budget of $6,000 (usd). And I'm looking at these two cars. I want something really reliable with good gas milage and 2004 or newer with less than 100,000 miles. (I know its a lot to ask for, but i have found quite a few In my price range) Anyone have experience with both? And which one would you recommend. I've heard some bad things about focus and really good things about the elantra. Any other cars to consider? I do have sort of a small budget, so things like civics are pretty much out of the question unless I get one with high miles.

    I would choose the Ford Focus over an early model Hyundai. The new Hundais have been greatly improved over the past few years. Good Luck
