Gun advice from anyone with actual combat experience?

We're 'preppers' thinking about what we'd need to defend our farm if things got ugly and would like some professional advice.

When it comes to all the stuff they bolt on 'assault' rifles these days, what is actually usefull in a real fight? Looking over the farm everything would be 0-300 yds. We've got SKS's as our base rifle. (CA, so lots of restrictions) There are a million after market mods for them.

Flashlight?

Folding stock?

Scope? Sights? What kind for our distance?

Bayonet?

Laser?

Bi-pod?

What matters in the real world and what doesn't?

Thanks in advance

A good mounted flashlight would be a must, an optic (CCO or ACOG or EOtech) would be good but not completely necessary. Don't bother with an actual scope though. Bayonets are dumb, lasers are only useful if it's IR and you have night vision goggles or some other way to see an IR beam. Bipods are okay (ACOGs come with a grip with a built-in bipod, they're really handy).

For a personal defense assault rifle, I'd put an optic, a light, and maybe a grip. I'd skip the rest without a specific need.

edit: Just thought I'd mention, the more crap you attach, the more crap you have to worry about breaking or running out of battery power. Keep it as simple as you can.

Definitely a flashlight but if you can afford it, a night vision scope would be better since a flashlight will give away your location. I wouldn't wory about the rest.

    Folding Stock - Not necessary.

Bayonet - If an intruder is close enough to use a bayonet, you've already screwed up.

Laser - useless, will give away your position

    Bipod - Not necessary.

One with a scope for long range work. The rest should be just as they come for general work.

Buy a lot of bullets and learn to fire the weapons accurately from all positions without the use of attached doo-dads.

    Flashlight and a scope.
