Guy on C-List sold me a car with that doesn't match VIN on title?
So maybe I'm an idiot for buying a used car privately on Craigslist, and I'm definitely an idiot for not looking at the VIN's more closely, but anyway here's the deal. I bought a car from a guy, it's out of state so I drove over and took a look at the car, paid him and he gave me the title, and I brought the title back home to get a temp registration so I can drive the car back. Problem is while filling out paperwork for the registration I looked more closely at the title and realized it doesn't quite match up. The make and model are the same, but the year and color are different for the VIN on the title. So either he lied when he got the title for the car, or he gave me a different title. The title is in his name, so I don't think it's stolen. Maybe the car is stolen? But that would still mean he gave me a title to a car he owns, right? There's a small chance he might own both cars and he just accidentally gave me the wrong title, or maybe the title was messed up when he bought it. Anyway what should I do? He has the money and the car right now, since I can't legally get the car back to my state and registered until I get this problem ironed-out; am I screwed out of both? How should I confront him about it? I'm supposed to pick up the car on Sunday, so I'd have to wait until then if I wanted to talk to him face-to-face or see the car again to check the VIN's on the door and dash (since it's a long drive for me). Should I talk to the DMV or the police? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
