I went to get the pics off my flash card and it says "must format disc"...whats up?

I tried another cord for downloading the pics.......same message. WHats the deal. I never had a problem before and its SANDISC 4gb a good brand. Is their any tricks to getting past this problem like taking more pics on a different camera ? I can't get the photos off of the disc with this message.

In my experience that means the card has failed.

From what you're writing here it would appear you've been mistreating this card. In that case the failure is probably your fault.

You mention using that card in another camera. That's a no, no with these cards. Never do that. An easy way to make these cards fail.

Have you been storing photos on the card, using the camera to show photos to your friends? Another way to make a card fail. These cameras / cards are not viewing devices.

If your card won't "talk" with your computer recovery software won't help you at all. You could try an external usb card reader. If this also fails the card is done and your photos are lost.

I don't know how long it will take for people to get this message but here's the proper workload for these cards and the cameras that use them.

    1. shoot

    2. upload at the end of every (I mean every) shooting day.

    3. Once you know your files are safe, format the card in the camera.

Do not store photos on the card. Do not use the card / camera as a viewer. Do not use one card in different devices.

What you need to do is run some free recovery software. Sometimes such software is mentioned on your Sandisk packaging. if not, see here:

    http://download.cnet.com/iFileRecovery/3000-2248_4...

Don't take anything else on the card nor copy anything to it until you have recovered your files.

Next Format your card in the camera it is to be used with. Don't use it like a portable storage device and copy other things to it from other devices or it will corrupt. Put pen drive in your pocket or purse instead for that kind of thing.
