Question about getting started in acting! :)?

Ok, so here it is. I'm only in middle school, but I'm like, positive that I want to be an actress. There's a lot more details behind it, but I know what I want to do. But the thing is, where I live, it's almost impossible to become an actress. I live in a small town, with no talent/acting agencies (that I know of). I'm an amazing actress, I'm also trained in singing, and a bit of dancing. I have a really good voice. I'm a very outgoing person, and I make friends really quickly. I have an amazing sense of humor too. My friends tell me that I'm a combination of Lucy Hale and Jennifer Lawrence LOL. I've been researching this for a LONG time! I know, I'm a big dreamer, and I'm only young. Trust me, I know how hard it is! Not everybody makes it, and you have about a one in a million chance to make it big time. And I also understand that acting is a job. It's not just for fun. I'm not one of those people who just wants to get into acting for the money, or anything like that. I want to do it, because it's what I love. But, I'm very, VERY confident that this is what I want, and I know with lots of hard work and perseverance anything can happen! :) Part of me is scared though. I mean, you see all of these celebrities and stuff, being like attacked by the paparazzi and fans and stuff. That stuff scares the heck out of me! But you see, when I'm 18, I'm going to possibly go to California on a trip, and I really want to try out acting then. So here are a few questions. I'm looking for only professional answers PLEASE! 10 points for best answers :)

1. Is 18 to late to get started in acting?

2. How hard is it to actually make it into acting?

Any other advice would be amazing! Thank so sooo much in advance to everybody who answers!!

    1. No, 18 is not too late. You don't have to have a professional career as minor to have one as an adult. In fact many child actors have trouble making the transition into adult acting. You only need an agent if you're going to work professionally, so that your town doesn't have one isn't going to prevent you from learning and growing as an actor.

Take acting classes, attend an acting camp, things like that. Voice lessons and dance lessons are helpful too. You'll also want to audition for what you can - school plays, community theater, other local productions. Even performing with a choir, dance troupe or other performance. Other things you can try:

    * Check into speech/drama clubs and competing in the acting categories of forensic competitions.

    * Read all kinds of plays and scripts, keeping an eye out for characters and monologues you want to develop.

    * Contact local film school and ask how they find actors for student films and check those sources.

    * Check out the website of your local film commission and see what is available there.

    * Get together with friends and make your own movies or put on your own productions.

    * Keep working hard in school and embrace learning - you never know when you might use something you learned for acting.

You can look into good acting schools/programs for after high school. It's not required for a professional acting career, but it can be helpful. No only can you build your acting skills, but you also get to work with people as passionate about acting as you and it's a chance to start to network and make connections in the industry. Networking is how actors find out about a lot of opportunities.

    2. EXTREMELY hard. Actors are not just "discovered". It's more like starting a company and you are the product that has to be marketed and sold. So you need a good product (talent, training and experience), but you also have to have a good understanding of the industry. And like in the business work, the vast majority of companies fail. But having a good product and knowing the business will increase your chances of success.

Most professional actors do not support themselves by acting alone. To give you some idea, there are currently 100,000 professional actors just in LA. These are actors who are members of the actor's union. That's not counting professional actors in other parts of the country, non-union actors, or wannabe actors just starting out. There just isn't enough work for everyone.

Plus every acting job you get is temporary so you always have to worry about when (and if) you'll get another job. It's not like a slow, steady climb to the top. You might have small roles, then one big role and then when that's done you might not have anything at all for months and then back to small roles again. It's a rollercoaster career.

It's very competitive, very unstable. and very challenging career. You're rejected far more than you're accepted so you need to remain hopeful in the face of rejection. Often you're judged on your looks. Not that you have to be beautiful, but you have to look "right". You could give a great audition, but if you don't match the picture the director has in their head or you don't look "right" with the other people they're casting, you won't get the part. So you have to be comfortable with your looks and know how to handle the stress in a healthy way.

That's why you really should be passionate about acting and the process and working with others to put together a production - because that helps make it all worth it.

    1. No, 18 isn't too late. There is no right or wrong age to start acting. 18 is actually a good time to start acting professionally, because you are considered an adult. Once you are 18 you can legally go to auditions without adult supervision. Before turning 18 and going to California, you should start gaining experience and training. Start looking into acting classes, workshops, summer camps, etc. Also look for any upcoming auditions for school plays and local plays in your community. You cannot act professionally without years training and experience under your belt. Your at an age where there are many ways to gain experience. Take advantage of those opportunities ASAP. Experience and training is for your own good and will really benefit you. It will only make you a better, stronger actress.

    2. There's no way to explain how hard it is to become an actress. Bottom line, acting is very competitive and there's absolutely no guarantee you'll ever make it. If you genuinely love acting the hard work isn't miserable. It's exciting and fun. Just go in knowing you probably aren't going to become the next Jennifer Lawrence. It's a possibility, it's just not likely.

    Other advice:

-Paparazzi and crazed fans are the last thing you need to worry about. Becoming an actress doesn't necessarily mean fame. If you are truly worried about paparazzi, you should just stick to small projects like short films and theater. Don't get me wrong. Broadway starts still have fans, but its more of a select crowd.

-Don't let the thought of talent and fame get to your head. Try to not go around saying that you are an amazing actress, have an amazing sense of humor, and a really good voice. I'm sure your very talented, but its just not very polite to go around saying so. I know you were just telling us about your talent, so we could supply you with good answers. I'm just telling you this for future reference.

-Don't give up. People might discourage you, but you just have to keep trying. You cant help the fact that you love acting. Listen to the people who believe in you. And most importantly, believe in yourself. If you ever stop acting, it should be your choice and your choice only.

    Good luck :)

1 18 isn't too late to start acting.

2 It is really hard because so many people want to do it and there are already more actors than there are acting jobs. For every job there are about 1000 experienced professional actors.

You are extremely unlikely to ever be famous. Most actors only get a couple of weeks acting a year so you will spend most of your time doing your second job, the one that pays the bills, so you need to make sure that you get good grades at school so that you can get a good job to do when you are not acting.

If you enjoy acting, go for it. And no, it is never to late to start acting, not even at age 18, and you can begin your journey to the entertainment world at any age. The only way to make it into the show business is that you would have to work very hard at what you want to become. My advice is to never give up on your dreams, and we can all let our lights shine. You can't change the world, unless you change yourself. Its not what you know, its what you can prove to others what you can do. Don't live in the dream; you got to chase the dreams you fighting for what to want to become successful. Never let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do anything, not even your own parents. I do have faith that you will make it to the show business. Have faith in what you can do. If you let your own light shine, you will give others permission to do the same. There are over millions of popular actors, actresses, singers, musicians, writers, and other entertainers who became very famous stars. If they can do it, you can you. Strive to be the best you can be. Always have confidence in yourself, as this is an encouragement by having faith. Don't stop believing at what you're good at. And as you liberate from your own fear, your presence will liberate others. May god bless you on your journey to success and your goal to become a popular person. I hope this helps.
