San Francisco Cable Cars?
When people think of San Francisco, one of the first things they think of are the cable cars. I've been wondering, though, do a lot of residents actually use them for transportation or are they mainly tourist attractions? Do most residents use the BART or MUNI for transportation instead?

Residents do ride on the cable cars, though not as frequently as tourists. Residents ride the cable car during the early hours of service between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., while it is mostly tourists who ride the cable cars after 9:00 a.m. Residents also ride the cable car during the late-afternoon hours, along with tourists.
Some residents do ride on BART and other buses as well. MUNI refers to public transit vehicles in San Francisco, which also includes all three of the cable car lines.
I rode the cable cars to and from school during the early morning and late afternoon. As an adult the cable cars were my primary mode of transportation to my work place. Since retiring from my job, I continue to ride the cable cars on a daily basis.

Residents use to ride on cable cars to get where they go in city in the early 1920 -1940's but people in sf drives or take the electrified trains across the bay bridge to get to destination ! The cable cars are mainly for tourist attraction today

I only do cable cars if I'm with some out of towners who insist on riding the cable cars. There are alternate means of getting to the same places (buses mostly). And I think at this point the cable cars cost $5 to ride whereas buses (trains, trolleys) only cost $2.

It's quite rare to find a resident on the cable car. It's pretty expensive--$6.00 each direction--not really cost effective as commute transportation.
I think the last time I was on one was 1995.

They are more for tourist. I think they are going to get rid of the last of them soon. They only run a shot distance as is.
