I'm not TRYING to argue, but how do Christians reconcile the nature of heaven?

Bare with me here...

In heaven, you're supposed to be "at peace," right?

However,

When our loved ones die, we're told that they're "watching over us."

So... if a parent dies, and watches as his/her offspring are sent to hell... how can they be at peace? Surely, in the history of humanity, this has to have happened many times... mom and/or dad go to heaven... several years later, junior goes the other way.

Which is it? Watches over us? Exists in peace? Watches us but doesn't care? What is the reconciliation for this enigma?

Update:

I'm getting from a few responses that the "watching over us" part isn't a biblical point-of-view.

Fair enough - but as a parent, I can't imagine being "at peace" without knowing how my children are doing. Nor could I be at peace if I knew they were suffering.

Are you suggesting that we simply forget about our children? How could I look forward to such an outcome?

In heaven we will know things that we cannot possibly know here. In general, we will know that all things will work out in the end. The Church does not teach that anyone is in hell as yet. We cannot say. It does teach that hell will probably be a sparse place, though.

It is a teaching that the Saints (people in Heaven) are watching over us and are aware of the passage of time and events on earth, even that they can intervene in our affairs. Those who are still in Purgatory not so much, though they may be given permission to visit us on earth and get us to pray for them.

I haven't read any of that in the bible, and I don't think you could find it, either.

    Nowhere.

The spirit goes back to God, and there finds out everything, understands.

Not sure they 'watch' or know what goes on here. Likely that is in

    God's domain.

The spirit would learn who people really are.

Lots of times even in the bible, offspring aren't so 'nice',

actually plot to kill or take the inheritance and so on.

They often just want what they want and don't care about

    others...it can happen.

Doesn't say they go to hell at death.

So, knowing what the bible teaches is important.

    This is found online.

I'm sorry but all of you guys are wronng and your problem is that you haven't read the scriptures , when a pperson dies there soul goes to sheol (hell) and that's where they sleep until the judgment of the great white throne, they aren't awakend until that and by that time nothing on eath is remembered and ur spirit talks for youu during judgment. Oh and to answer that dudes question about multiple wives, someone actually asked jesus that exact question in the bible, that's how I know you haven't read it. There is no marrage in the kingdom except everyone being married to the lamb(jesus). This is why its called the marrage feast of the lamb. Your a bride of christ.

    also, consider this:

a man's wife dies and goes to heaven. 10 years later, after he has recovered from the loss of his wife, he remarries. Now, when he and his new wife die and go to heaven, what happens? the first wife would have been waiting for him. is he now allowed two wives in heaven? A concept which God is very much against?

doesn't make a lot of sense does it?

The idea that loved ones watch over us in heaven isn't biblical.

First, that's unBiblical. Second, if it were true, then when the loved ones die, they only watch over us who are still ALIVE. When we die, there's no reason to watch over us. So therefore they would be in peace no matter what.

Heaven and hell are two places created in your mind. That place between your ears. The other side is just that, a dwelling for spirits...... each in their own conditions, as they deserve. Good for the good and not so for those that weren't. Remember repentance works there just as good as on earth.

    Peace.,

They are not watching over us. Heaven is perfect so you are right. They wouldn't be happy if they could see us. God is watching over us.

You must learn scripture from man made doctrine as being "watched over".

No Christian will ever attempt to answer this with a reasonable explanation.
