Is Bi Polar contagious?
My wife of 32 years has been being treated for Bi Polar disorder for nearly 30 years. Life has not been so much fun for her or our kids and me. Lately I've been more unhappy than ever. After a few visits to a Psychiatrist I've been diagnosed as Bi Polar. My ups and downs are not as extreme as her's but I can feel them. My family is unaware of my diagnosis which I just got yesterday. They're also unaware that I've been having these issues that I've mostly kept hidden. Did I become Bi Polar because of decades of trying to help my family through my wife's disease?

I "think" that Bi Polar is being over diagnosed a lot.
Some depression is probably normal for someone in your situation.
That you can get beyond it and still have some fun does you credit.
But a shrink is going to see that as mood swings and come to the conclusion you have it.
You're a better man than I am for dealing with that all these years.
Good luck.

Hi DOGBETO I am Jan
I have heard in many cases on my on line support group that many times the spouse usually ends up with a depression diagnosis living with someone with bipolar can have a very huge part of feelings of your own.
The best thing to do now that you have it is to tell your family it is a matter of support you need I wouldn't be surprised if your episodes get more extreme than hers you have been keeping this all inside and isolating it the longer people take to get help the worse it gets.
You are not alone there are many support groups for you to join maybe locally around you which would be best or on line mine I have had for 8 years for those diagnoses with any mental health and wellness issues, We are a very empathetic group and it is free life time membership of SSA all features blogging sharing with others gives you hope and makes you realize you are not alone you really so need a release if you do not join mine join anyone you need support especially since you haven't told anyone you cant keep that all in side it is very un healthy and will get worse, I am glad you are seeing someone for it. The group is at www.bipolar4lifesupport.com.
If you didn't get diagnosed I would tell you to go to www.bpso.org that is for spouses and loved ones with bipolar Bi[polar individuals can not join strictly for loves ones. At my group we welcome anyone for a free membership try to get support and yes please let your family know you are just as important and need support as your wife and try to find some where to gain support so you know you are NOT alone
peace jan hope this helped

No being Bipolar isn't "contagious" it's a mental illness not the flu.
Honestly being diagnosed with bipolarism is over done.
Most likely you're just depressed or stressed.

Allot has to be done with the people who diagnose you. You can be improperly diagnosed. But bipolar is not a contagious disease that spreads, it is a mental illness, it in in your genes but may not have been triggered until later in your life.
