the processing of the petition itself is up to 6 months. however, how long it takes after that depends on what sort of petition it is. if it's an IR or CR petition, it will be sent to the National Visa Center and go through more processing before it's set up for interview. and that can take another 3-6 months. if it's something else, it will depend on the visa category and the country of this person's citizenship. so, anywhere from 2-23 years before it becomes valid for use and this person can use it to come to the US.
