Why did Michelle Obamas great great great great gandma get a monument? Who paid for it?

So what did her great great great great great grandmother accomplish to get a section of property with a monument on it?? And who paid the bill for the land and monument?

http://news.yahoo.com/monument-michelle-obama-ance...

REX, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia are investigating after a monument dedicated to one of first lady Michelle Obama's relatives was knocked over in suburban Atlanta.

Clayton County Commissioner Sonna Singleton tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/190XEEv ) that a stone monument to Michelle Obama's great-great-great-grandmother, Melvinia Shields, was pushed over and will need to be inspected for cracks. The report was aired Monday.

Officials say Shields was born into slavery in the mid-1800s and later settled in Rex, Ga., — about 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

Officials say the monument was installed about a year ago, and the county commission organized a celebration later this month to recognize Shields' connection to the White House.

It wasn't immediately clear when the monument was toppled.

Update:

the only accomplishment I can find is that she was that great great great grandmother of Michelle Obama... It's just not appropriate to build a monument simply because a great granddaughter of one of the residents is the wife of the current US president. She certainly had done nothing 'great' to the country or to the place where she lived.

Are they now going to erect monuments to ALL of the great great great granparents of ALL the past first ladies?? I would assume that this would need to be done to be fair.

i've seen it. not exactly a monument. that's a stretch by today's news nets. more like a plaque

and if you travel around much, you'll find every little town that can find any connection to ANYTHING famous erects a tourism plaque

i've seen them for truman's wifes family ,billy carter , and reagan's wife's cousin

Georgia Department of Economic Development Tourism Division and Clayton County officials who have been working on the Melvinia Shields project for several years.

More than 500 people were in attendance At the end of the program, the black and white members of the Shields family who came from around the Southeast gathered for group photographs and conciliatory remarks to cap off the occasion.

“The memorial, which would honor the first lady’s great-great-great-grandmother, was met with some opposition from the community, CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reports.

Funding for the memorial would come from a special tax on hotels and motels, the money from which is intended for marketing and developing Clayton County.”….

“We’re having a series of events on June 26 [to commemorate] Michelle Obama’s third great-grandmother,” she said. “The state of Georgia awarded Clayton County a grant to make a memorial monument in honor of Melvinia Shields … and the lives and stories she represents.”

No doubt this is a small expression of the desperate frustration felt by the Rebellion; an act performed despite the unprecedented surveillance, oppression, and control that American technology has now made possible.

The article said the monument was erected over a year ago therefore I suspect currying favor with the current First Lady, whose ancestor suffered under slavery while Ms. Obama did not. She just lives in the nation's house which is reported to have been partially built using slaves.

Taken from the link attributed ""Our church and the community will be handling that and setting up an account at SunTrust bank for a memorial for Ms. Melvina Shields," Applin said. "We're going to have a dedication here later in the year. We're raising money for the historical marker to be put in the cemetery and then the state is going to put up a monument."

If the State put up a monument, I would suspect the taxpayers paid for it but I could be wrong.

that is previous ridiculous to make a statue of a no man or woman who did no longer something. Marrying someone who became promoted previous his means is hardly ever something that Michelle Obama must be congratulated for. And as for her ancestor .... Who why even as ?

I have no idea why. She seems remarkable in no way at all.

As to who paid for it, it was probably through private donation.

There seems to be no limit to the Obama's ability to worship themselves.
