Is communism the most misunderstood socioeconomic philosophy?
Many people think of communism as this big, evil totalitarian government that controls all aspects of the market, but in reality, communism advocates the removal of both the government and the market. There are many schools of thought, ranging from Marxism and its variants (which typically include this totalitarian government that essentially controls everything; this has been proven not to work) to anarchism (which typically advocates a direct move from a capitalist society to a communist society, usually through a violent revolution by working-class citizens).
To me, it seems quite inevitable that, with the rise of technology that will serve humanity, communism will come about own its own eventually. Communism has always stricken me (quite apart from the thoughts of many others, to my surprise) as the end result of vast technological improvement. With the rise of technology, there will be a decrease in jobs, especially in the common labor department, which will make the disparity between the rich and the poor enormous, and capitalism will collapse due to its reliance on human greed, and communism will follow. Basically, the people will work to maintain the current level of technology, and there will be no need for a market. By then, food production rates will most likely ridiculously high, and many medical procedures will be handled by machines. People would volunteer to do work (or perhaps, if the volunteerism was at a low, technological restrictions would give the people an incentive to work) and keep the society stable and prosperous.
For the record, I DO NOT necessarily think that communism is the best decision at the moment. I DO, however, think that we should be slowly moving towards a system that involves more concentration on the general evolution of technology and compassion for life in general.
@Demand Destruction Ah, but could it not work in larger societies? I believe it could if a proper distribution system was put into place.
@Yes We Can! That is why I said that communism would eventually occur when technological advancement was very far along. All people would have to do is keep up with the technology.
@Delusional Vikings Fan Yeah, I know. Don't tell them that, though.
@John M No government, free world, no market to control your economic situation to keep you from going where you want and doing what you want. . . Yeah, certainly sounds like this system would restrict freedom of choice a lot more than the current one.
@How Would I Know This is why I mentioned the massive advancement in technology preceding the switch to communism. I also mentioned that, when volunteerism is low, some of people privileges (but certainly not needs) would be taken away. People today love entertainment; I don't see why people in the future should be any different.
@Silence Dogood
Communism has never and will never work, so just stop it.
"@Yes We Can! That is why I said that communism would eventually occur when technological advancement was very far along."
-LOL, no it won't.
Response: LOL, yes, it probably will.
"Their propaganda has trained people to think it is an authoritarian regime with its sights on mass genocide."
-With good reason.
Response: No, not with good reason. I said before that I thought it was best if communism came over time, with technological advancement. There is nothing wrong with this type of society; it has the potential to be very peaceful and prominent society where people can freely express themselves and do as they please without a government controlling them.
"(which typically include this totalitarian government that essentially controls everything; this has been proven not to work) to anarchism (which typically advocates a direct move from a capitalist society to a communist soci
ety, usually through a violent revolution by working-class citizens)."
-How do you expect the "revolution" to happen without genocide? You think people will just handover what is theirs to you?
Response: Did I not just say that I thought the best solutions was to wait for society to peacefully transition into communism?
"Communism cannot exist without a big, evil totalitarian government."
-Yep.
Response: Nope.
:"I also mentioned that, when volunteerism is low, some of people privileges (but certainly not needs) would be taken away."
-And just who is going to do this "taking"? What "privileges" do you think you would take from me without my consent?
Response: Society is doing the taking. If volunteerism is low, and you and a lot of other people are on your butts and don't want to lose your privileges, you will work for them and for the sake of keeping society going. It is a mutually beneficial relationship. Everyone works,
and everyone gets the benefits. Plus, a large workforce probably wouldn't be required at such a high level of technological development.
"No government, free world, no market to control your economic situation to keep you from going where you want and doing what you want"
-And you contradict yourself. You say some "peoples privileges would be taken away" and then you say there would be nothing to keep you from going where and doing what you want? Which is it? If there is no government or market, who is going to "take away some people's privileges"? Oh and the only thing controlling your economic situation is your own inability to change it. Do something worthwhile instead of b*tching that other people don't give you enough.
Response: No, I do not. People would be free to move and settle down where they please and when they please. While they're there, they should do their fair share of work, which, again, wouldn't be much considerin
g the high level of technological development that would be required for such a system to exist. There is no economy because everyone provides for everyone else. Nice ad hominem, by the way. When did I ever whine about other people not giving me enough? This is a typical argument from conservatives towards liberals, so we have a straw man. Two logical fallacies in a single sentence, ladies and gentlemen! We have a winner! I'd also suggest that you do something worthwhile and get off Yahoo! Answers. I honestly don't even know why I took the time to answer these questions since the answers were so painfully obvious, but I suppose that's what I get for using the "add details" system to make this an interactive forum.

Yes it is, I think it may be remnants from the Cold War where the US did everything in its power to stop 'godless communism'. Their propaganda has trained people to think it is an authoritarian regime with its sights on mass genocide.

The problem is that communism is based on punishing people for success and initiative. People are not going to punish themselves for working hard. They'll either stop working or you'll need a big, oppressive government to punish them.
Communism cannot exist without a big, evil totalitarian government.

Nope, it is understood quite well, and rejected where free choice is an option.
