I saw a braided line that was 20 lb test but it said equivalent to 12lb mono test line what does that mean?
Does this refer to the actual strength of the line? and if so why is it different or is it referring to the diameter of the line? I'm fairly new to serious fishing, like i've been fishing since i was little but this is the first time i am targeting specific species and looking at my own gear any help would be of great help.

That means you can put a 20lb braided line on a reel that can hold a maximum of 12lb mono line.

if i'm fishing for any smaller fish such as bass, trout, walley, sauger, saugey the list goes on and on, i usually won't use anything hevier than 8 lb test. The test of a line really doesn't gage the size of the fish that can be reeled in with it. I work at cabelas part time while I'm at college and my boss's husband pulled in a 36 pound catfish while jigging for walley with 6 lb test. It really depends on how you reel the fish it. If you have a big fish on a light line you've gotta be smart and can't go jerking the pole around trying to set the hood and all that good stuff. You have to be patient, let the fish wear itself down then once it gets tired it will be much easier to reel in. I believe when they test the line, the six pounds is how much it can take out of water. When you're reeling a fish in under water, the fish figting against being pulled in will compensate. If you have your drag set loose enough and you are smart about it, you can pull in some pretty big fish with a 6 lb line.

what it means is that it has the diameter equivalent to the 12lb mono. So if you can fit say 150 ft of 12lb mono on a reel then you can fit 150ft of the braided on the reel.
That is the upside of the braided and the fact that its harder to tangle and you feel the hit sooner. Down side is that it floats and its visible. What you need to do is put braided on and then add a few feet of and 20lb mono to the end of the line so it is invisible above the lure in the water

That just means that the braided line is a 20 pound test line that is the same diameter as 12 pound test monofilament.
If you're new to fishing then stick with monodilament. These super braided lines have their place in fishing, but they can be a pain sometimes with the line getting tangled on the fishing rod eyes, or the line will dig into the line that is on the spool and hinder your casting and I cannot forget that you would have to use some monofilament as a backing to keep the super braid from slipping on your spool, or use some electrical tape on the spool then tie the super braid on. This has to be done, because super braided lines are very slick and if there is no backing, or nothing used to keep it from slipping on the spool it will seem like there is something wrong with the reels drag system when it is just the line slipping on the spool. You also have to make sure you do the knots good and usually hit the knot with superglue to make sure it holds...speaking of glue for super braided lines P-Line has put out a glue with some tubing called stop glue and it was made to eliminate having to tie knots on super braided lines.
I also forgot to say super braided lines can cut you pretty bad if you grab the line when you catch a nice size fish. This is something that happens to seasoned anglers too from time to time and it happens from when the fish is in close then the fisherman grabs the line, or the line has a tangle that the fisherman tries to free in the middle of a fight.
Here is something to read about super braided lines that I found in Yahoo! Voices.

Here is another thing to read that is from Mustad hook, line and sinker.

I have never heard of a 20# braid with the diameter of 12# mono (which is what the package is referring to.. diameter)
20# should be the diameter of 6# mono in most situations.

the line you saw was 20lb test but with braided line the diameter is smaller so the diameter of that line was equivalent to the diameter of 12 lb mono

All manufactures of Mono use the same diameters or close to it....all that means is the 20lb braided line has the same diameter of 8lb test line in mono....the 20 lb braided line means is breaking point is 20 lbs.....
.010 = the diameter of 8lb test line.........the 20lb braided line you have is the same diameter .010 as the 8lb test line in Mono....get it ??
