Clipping a Guinea pig's nails/claws...?

Our family has a pet Guinea pig that has long nails. Should they be clipped? I used to have pet rats and we would just put a rock in the cage to help grind them down a bit. Will that work for a Guinea pig, or should we be clipping them?

Any help would be much appreciated... thank you! :)

Rocks would do absolutely nothing for a guinea pig's nails. It would need to be a brick, which will help keep their nails filed down. But if the piggy's nails are long then the brick won't do anything unless the nails have first been cut short.

This is a great video for learning how to clip your piggy's nails effectively without hurting them.

You need to clip your guinea pig's nails every month. Start clipping your guinea pig's nails at an early age, as this will help them get used to this necessary task. You can use special guinea pig nail clippers from the pet store, but I find human nail clippers work best:

If your guinea pig has light coloured nails you should be able to see a red/pink/dark coloured line through the middle of the nail which is the blood supply. Avoid cutting through this! Clip say two millimeters away from the blood supply. If you do cut it, though, don't panic. Just put their little bleeding nail into the styptic powder or corn starch and wait about thirty seconds. Try using a flashlight to locate the blood supply if your guinea pig has dark nails.

Feeding them something green and leafy like lettuce or celery leaves usually works best when clipping their nails. This is because it's light and they can easily grab a piece in their mouth and continue chewing it for a while before they will need to get another piece. Where as with something like carrot, it's heavier and it will keep falling out their mouth, and they will continually be trying to get new pieces, and you'll never get any clipping done.

If you just can't clip their nails and it's too hard for you to do, then you can take them to the vet and get them to do it for the cheap price of around $20.

No rock, Guinea Pigs nails must be clipped - otherwise they grow and curl into their foot. It is possible to clip them yourself but depending on how tame your guinea pig is and how steady your hand is it can be easy or quite difficult. We take ours to the vets as its much easier and less stressful. If you do chose to do it yourself you need to be aware that it is likely you may cut too far which can be very painful and therefore need to get yourself a styptic stick from the pet to stop the nail bleeding. Safest thing to do though is just keep taking little bits of the end of the nail. Watch this video too, it's quite helpful.
