Ebay forces me to purchase?
I need an old PS2 keyboard, so I bid on one last night on ebay. I was immediately out-bid after 3 bids, and loosing the item, I moved on to find another keyboard for sale. I did, clicked the buy it now button, and await the arrival of my keyboard.
Today I get this e-mail from E-Bay
Dear eBay Community Member,
The following item, on which you placed a bid (***********) has had a bid retraction or cancellation, and you are now the high bidder. Congratulations!
But wait! last night I was told I cannot have it, So i bought another. I don't want 2! I contacted e-bay by phone, and tried to discuss this with them, telling them, it should be "offered" back to me, not placed in my lap and told its mine! they don't understand that, and told me to contact the seller and tell them i don't want it. I replied with "but why do i have to do this? i take pride in keeping my e-bay purchases paid for, and serious. I don't want a bid retraction on my account." Why wouldn't e-bay just offer this item back to me, instead of forcing it on me, then leaving me and the seller with wasted time communicating on this issue, and a possible red mark on my purchase history. E-bay phone support closed with, "contact the seller and retract the bid, we are pleased we were able to help you today, goodbye" Question is, will this effect my purchase history on e-bay? will it leave a bad mark on my account if I retract?
Roddy, thank you for your reply, For all the protection e-bay offers, this seems like a big issue. Although this was a $1.00 keyboard, I will simply purchase it, and put it on the shelf to avoid any negative comments, but what if this was a $1000.00 item! I tried to post this on the forum of e-bay, but I get a "I am not allowed to access this feature" error when i try and post. so I cannot raise this concern anywhere! hopefully e-bay sees this glitch.
If a buyer becomes the higher bidder because of a retraction of a higher bid, the item should be "offered" back to the next highest bidder, Not forced on them.
Take this a step further, why wouldn't the sellers buddy put a max bid of $100.00 on the keyboard, I kept going higher and higher until i thought it was too much, then backed out when i still lost the item. The sellers buddy simply retracts and they have a great looking price for their keyboard, forced on me! That may not be what happened, and it may be
completely legit.
I Treasure my perfect rating on E-bay, I purchase a lot of stuff from that website. This is my first time "bidding" though. I always use the buy it now option. what a terrible experience. Thank goodness the item was not of significant value!
I hope e-bay sees this post and considers that I have just been legitimately scammed.

If the seller does not agree to let you out of the deal then yes it can cause you harm. If they open an unpaid item dispute they will win if you don't pay. Many sellers, including me, have our setting fixed to not accept bidders with unpaid strikes. This is probably the most immediate effect you will feel.
Get another one and it gets worse. Get a third one and your account may be restricted or terminated.
Even though you are outbid you can always become the high bidder again if a retraction takes place or if eBay terminates someones account that is bidding.
