I would like to buy or make an airband/ vhf radio that I can hear tv shows on like the older radios, but hd.?
I would like to make or buy a radio that will pick up tv stations on radio. The analog ones no longer work because they went to hd. I think it's vhf that is currently what can be used to pick up free public tv, abc, nbc, etc.,etc.. It's legal to watch free tv, why not listen, so I know there are radios that allow this, how can I make one or buy one. Have an old tv, an outdated computer, so what kinds of things to make or what kind to buy to listen to free tv?

Susan - There is no portable radio that can pick up tv station audio in the USA - sorry (that ended a few years ago - all stations must transmit in digital by law now). The free over the air broadcasts are all digital.
You could buy a cheap DTV converter box and then take the audio output of it and then amplify it. That is a lot to go through to listen to tv audio. You would be better off just buying a cheap flatscreen TV and listen to that.

Check out Goodwill or another thrift store. Lots of DTV converters are showing up there. Make sure that you get the remote for it. You will also need some kind of antenna. Add a cheap pair of powered computer speakers and you should be good to go. Oh. You will also want to hook it to your old TV at first. Just to run the setup and scan for channels.
FWIW: The difference between the old analog and the digital broadcasts is ...well... that. Analog verses digital. Also UHF channels above 52 were vacated. and the low VHF in many markets was also vacated. If you are using a rabbit ears antenna you only need to pull them out to 15 inches.
