Have you ever inadvertently shoplifted?

Like both you and the cashier overlook something in your basket, or you've been clothes shopping and have thrown a garment over your arm and continued to shop and then paid for you other purchases and oops found the garment on your arm when you got to your car? What did you do?

Over time this has happened to me twice. No I do not shoplift, I'm too scared of going to jail but one time had a blouse thrown over the edge of my cart and only discovered it when I was loading packages in my car another time shopped for a protective apron for ceramics class and was so busy talking with a friend that we were outside of the store before I realized I had the darn thing in my hands. That time I quickly walked back in and put it back...being thankful I was not stopped at the door.

Update:

Jason if you didn't take the chocolates home or return them...what did you do? Eat them I bet! :)

yep .. funny stuff and you just know you wouldnt be believed

happened to me when I was about 14

I had picked up a bag of chocolate things and kept wandering around the shop looking for something else

when I couldnt find it I walk straight out through the entrance area

    no bells no running security

I was a long way down the mall when I realised

I was too scared to take it back or even take them home :)

    EDIT

    its true

I ate some and threw the rest away, ordinarily I would have taken chocs home to share

my poor brain couldnt deal with the confusion of possibly being thought of as a thief

The closest I've come to that is nearly walking out the shop with the item by accident but I realised before I went out. But I used to steal the pick and mix when I was about 5 haha. Honestly though there are times when I get tempted, it seems so simple and the thing of just getting it free can be very tempting. I never have so far though.

It's happened a few times. But there have also been times when I've been overcharged (for example, the cashier scans the item twice). I figure it evens out, so I didn't bother to do anything in either case.

Yes, omg. I tried on a ring that just had a little tag on it (not one of those cardboard things) and walked out with it. It wasn't even a cute ring so when I saw it at home I was like, "ugh". lol
