how can I cut my own hair?

Need to take a few inches off. Hair is thick and down to my elbows while standing. I have a very important night coming up. Last time, I did a middle part, two pigtails and cut it across evenly. But of course it isn't even when I let it down. I just need to know how to cut it evenly, myself.

Look it up on YouTube. These days, it'll teach you how to do ANYTHING. Good luck!

I always cut my own hair. I just do my usual part, separate it in two sections, but I don't put it in pigtails. Make sure you brush it so it's straight, then take a fine tooth comb and cut about half an inch at a time. Once it's at the length you like, turn the scissors vertical or very slightly diagonal and cut up so that it's not too blunt. This makes it look much more natural. For this part you might want to split your hair in two or three most sections. (I use loose ponytails so that the section I'm not cutting doesn't get in the way.) It's really easy, and you don't have to pay for it at all. But I do recommend getting scissors designed to cut hair. Sally Hansen and Walmart have cheap, but effective ones. Much better than normal scissors :)
