Why does Jaycee Dugard and the Dugard family still shun Jaycee's step-father, Carl Probyn?

Why do the Dugards still shun Jaycee's stepfather, Carl Probyn? It has been proven that every word he told the police about the kidnapping was true. The descriptions of the car and Nancy Garrido were spot on. It is now a known fact that he did everything possible to try and prevent Jaycee's kidnapping. Why do Jaycee and her mother still seem to have so much hostility toward him? Is it just Jaycee's mother being a vindictive ex-wife? Is it about money? I know there in mention in the book Jaycee is supposed to have written that she never felt that her step-father liked her. But still, it just seems like a cold hearted thing to do. For 18 years the police, and therefore, the public, considered him a suspect in her kidnapping. He is finally proven innocent and the behavior of Jaycee and her mother still cast a shadow on him and his reputation. It just seems vindictive to me to withhold redemption of this man whose life was also ruined by the same tragedy that theirs was. I thought with her new "Jaycee Dugard Foundation" she was trying to be a great humanitarian now.

Update:

@Jim....Good answer but I have never gotten the impression that Jaycee actually harbored any bad feeling toward Garrido. She proclaimed her undying devotion loud and long when he was arrested and swore that she would do everything she could to keep him out of jail. Obviously, there was no way she could keep him from doing time but it does make me wonder about that last minute plea deal that made no sense. I think Jaycee got him something good in that deal that wouldn't have set well with the public. I know statements have been read and words have been written claiming that Jaycee condemns Garrido's actions but I have never heard her say it herself. I don't think she feels any different about him now than when he was arrested. She just knows that she has to go along with the perceived resentment.

I had no idea that Carl Probyn and Jaycee's mother were still married. I don't know about the laws in CA but I could see how the primary factor fueling her mother's res

Update 2:

resentment could be that she might have to, one day, share some of the millions she has now with the man. Given this information, I wonder why he hasn't filed for divorce against Terry? It looks more and more like he cares a lot more for Jaycee and her mother than they do about him.

Another thought I had about Jaycee's shunning of Carl Probyn was that maybe, while she was kidnapped, that (in order to cope) she needed someone to blame for her victimization and picked Carl to focus her anger and resentment on.

Whatever the reason, it seems a shame that Jaycee and her whole family are on top of the world now and they refuse to share any of that happiness and well being with Carl Probyn. Apparently they want him to be punished for something he didn't do, just because they can. It just seems so petty and odd that Jaycee and her mother would be so spiteful toward this man to want to make him continue to live with this cloud of suspicion hanging over him. All it would take is a fe

Update 3:

few words of absolution and/or praise in one of their many paid interviews. It seems like a statement of his good character that her hasn't made an issue of it.

I don't know if the term 'transference' is correct, but its easier to have negative feelings toward him than to aim it at the father of her daughters.

Also, the Probyn's are seperated, not divorced.

The Probyns are still not divorced after all these years. I have never heard that before. I assumed he had found another woman by now. Most people don't live alone but many pretend they do but most pretenders are on some type of welfare. The whole case is weird. A lot of people separate when there are huge medical bills so they can get medicaid but continue to live together. I can see where it might be possible they never did separate. There may have been a lot of peer pressure and pressure from social workers to get rid of Carl because he was a prime suspect all those years. Could be typical step family drama. I also don't believe everything people say in their tell all books. They want to make money. The truth don't always make money.

This is what I wrote about this back in mid-2011:

"I hope someone gives Carl this message: I don’t know you, but I pray for you often.

I’ve read “A Stolen Life”. The attitude Jaycee has for Carl is what SO many children have for a step-parent. The difference in this case is that, while most kids go on to have a relationship through the growing-up years, and eventually bond with the step-parent, Jaycee didn’t. So she still has that 11-year-old attitude toward Carl.

As I read the book, I saw a transformation in Jaycee’s attitude toward her abductors…she actually seemed to come to care about them. That’s what happens when you spend time with someone. But Jaycee didn’t spend time with Carl, so she still has that little girl attitude toward a step-parent.

Carl, I hope that someday, maybe as Jaycee learns how hard it is to be a parent, and how easy it is to not know exactly the right thing to do, and how a child who you love thinks that you’re being unfair and mean, she will see you as the person you are — an imperfect human being who didn’t know exactly how to deal with a child who thought you were coming between her mother and herself.

But the choice is hers alone to make…nobody can MAKE her see. Carl, I’m just praying that, if you don’t already, you’ll come to know your Father in heaven who loves you truly."

Now to my thoughts about this subject in late 2015: It's sad to see that nothing seems to have changed. I feel awful for Carl Probyn. I sure hope that his daughter, Jaycee's half-sister, stays close to Carl. I search for information once in a while, and at this point I wonder if he's not just "out of sight, out of mind" for the rest of the family. I read that he said that the relatives of his estranged wife(or ex-wife...I don't know the status of the marriage at this time) blame him for Jaycee not trying to escape from her abductors. It's all so sad for him...he's being blamed for things he had no control over!

No body mentioned the cruelty that the stepfather Carl showed toward Jaycee, he was not loving to her at all….step dads often are a problem to step children by not respecting them or loving them…..he was mean and I for one am happy that Jaycee's Mum and Carl separated. He doesn't deserve them in his life

I think it is very sad that the family still shuns him. However, yes, I am sure Jayce resented him when her mother married him and he was trying to be a "father" figure for her. He was trying to get her to be responsible. He seemed like a very good family man. She also has a half-sister that she said in the book that she was having a difficult time getting to know. If you think about it, life went on for everyone. They thought of Jayce every day and Jayce thought of her people every day, but she had to survive and take care of her girls. So now it I like she is coming into a whole new world and getting re-aquainted with mom and friends. She probably just feels too over whelmed to include Carl, who she resented when she was 11. It is sad though. I really wish she would try and have a step daughter-father relationship with him and let him be a grand pa to her girls. And then again, she could be leary of all men. After all, she was abused by Phillip all those years.
