What is a microphone capsule and what does it do?

Also, why are they sometimes purchased separately? Like some of them I see can purchased by themselves, and don't state that they are used with a specific microphone.

Thanks for any help! Sorry, these are probably some totally basic questions, but I'm just starting to look into them, and don't really know! :)

The capsule is the diaphragm and coil assembly. Yes they can often be purchased separately as a repair part. However they will be specific to a make and model of mic.

It is the heart of the microphone as an assembly, in that it has the diaphragm(s) and coils/magnets/plates that convert sound to electricity.

It can work by itself, but is fragile and unwieldy, so is installed in an enclosure to make it easy to handle and to protect it, or built into a device.
