What does working for the National Guard entail?

I am seventeen years old, and will be eighteen this August. I am going into my senior year of high school, and plan to attend college right after. I am interested in joining the National Guard. I have sent my recruiter my contact info. I was wondering if you could explain to me, in layman terms, what my life would be like, what time of time commitment this would include (like how long are trainings, what do they include?) and how it would coincide with my college/high school life. Could I join in high school if I am 18 and planning to graduate and attend college?

You can join at 17 with parental permission. You could have enlisted under the "split option' program and attended basic training this summer and AIT after you graduate next year. But you are too late for that.

You can join now and start attending drill (for which you will get paid). After you graduate you will attend basic training (10 weeks) and AIT (a month to over a year depending on what MOS (job) you pick).

After basic and AIT you will return home and start drilling with your unit...one weekend a month and 15 days in the summer.

About 40% of all new Guardsmen are full time college student..
