Upcoming trapping season?
I live in southern WV. Trapping season is over but I am excited about this year. I trap not for fur but population control. Coyotes hammer wild game here. I see no good from these creatures mainly because they compete with me during bow season and spring turkey hunting lol. We really do not have a problem with them attacking domestic animals here. Here's my trouble. I live where they hate trapping. If they know you trap they want to know where, they always say well I don't want my coon dog in your trap that's why! Well the real reason is they want to destroy my traps. I don't want to start an argument but how can I get along better with dog hunters. I have never cought anyone's hunting hound iin a trap. I always go out into the woods to trap, never along well traveled roads where dog hunters roam. So any thoughts?
oops I did put this in fishing, lol. I made a mistake sorry guys but thanks for the answers .
I never said a was a failure as a hunter . Actually I am a successful hunter, I fill my tags every year and this year I have tagged out with two beautiful wild turkeys. The coyotes do a terrible number on young turkeys and fawns, that is why I trap. I am a veteran trapper and I can catch yotes very well. The only thing is that a dog hunter in these parts do not understand that the traps I use do not break a dog's foot. That is a misconception. They swivel as the prey tries to escape. Actually if a non target animal is caught I can release it and there is no harm. I run my lines daily during season. Those against trapping refuse to understand there would be more small game to hunt and large game if the yotes were thinned.

Your best bet would be to trap only on private property, and of course, obey all the laws on trapping. This should keep you mostly out of conflict with dog hunters and other anti-trappers who do not have permission to be there..... And, I'm sure you realize that different size traps, and even different types of traps, are best used for different animals, and in different situations....... However, if you are not really into trapping for the furs, and you are simply wanting to rid the area of as many coyotes as possible, and you also want to avoid any problems with anti-trappers...then I'd suggest getting started in predator calling instead of trapping... This way you have no traps out to be concerned with or worry about, you don't have to get out every morning to run your lines... And to be honest, it's much easier to learn to be successful at predator calling than it is at trapping, and much less expensive to boot, particularly if you are not intending to keep the furs, as in this case you can use any rifle (or shotgun) you wish to use, and not worry about damage to the hide. I know several predator callers who use their deer rifles for calling coyotes, and say that it's good practice for deer season... Also, in many areas you can call coyotes pretty much year round, while trapping is only legally allowed during a specified time during the winter.
I've trapped, as well as called predators, both for the fur market and for damage control, for various ranchers and farmers in northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas, for over 30 years, and I can tell you that there is A LOT MORE to trapping than just laying out some traps and then coming and getting the animals. Most people don't realize this...and I've also found that many people simply don't (or won't) believe it when you try to explain this fact to them...at least not until they start trying to actually trap animals themselves.... It's easy to get hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars invested in traps and trapping equipment, and over the 30 odd years I've trapped, I've got more invested it it than I had ever expected to.... But, if you already own a deer rifle, and you have no intention of keeping and selling the pelts, then you can pick up a couple of good mouth blown predator calls for under 50 dollars, and with a little knowledge and experience, be well on your way to calling predators.

Well bottom line is your not a good hunter if your blaming your failure on small animals that prey primarily on small game. If your really worried about interrupting the food chain than go hunt the large yotes.
So my suggestion is go grab a rifle and go in your yard and shoot the big ones if legal. I have only ever shot one coyote because it was getting awfully close to our house every night. Of course make sure its legal and you have all licenses and such.
Source(s): Anti-trapper. I hunt myself but no creature should have to expirence the pain of a trap and the inability to escape. The only time I dont mind it is if your protecting YOUR livestock, not making some excuse to try and justify it. - ?Lv 48 years ago
you asked this in the fishing section, try the hunter's section for more answers.
i don't know what kind of trap you use, but does it kill the animal inside it? or does it require you to do the deed? i would say use a non lethal trap, this way the dog owners won't care if their dog's get into your trap, as they can set it free.
