Should the Leafs consider buying out Grabovski's contract?

He is being paid 1st/2nd line center but only being used in a third line role. There are still a lot of years on the contract and $$ should not be a problem for the leafs.

Assuming Komisarek gets bought out they still have one compliance buyout left- should they use it on Grabovski? someone else or not use it?

Assuming Komisarek gets bought out they will have about 23M of cap space to sign 12 players. Guys like Franzen and Kadri will command big raises. Bozak or a replacement for him will cost them. Bernier needs to be signed. Their cap situation is not as good as one would think.

Update:

@Nick, I don't think it matters if they can find that top center or not. it doesn't seem like RC wants to play him in an offensive role. 5.5M over 4 more years is to much for someone that you have slotted into a defensive role (something he is not really suited to anyway)

Tom You can't resign your own buyouts, teams like Hawks and Canucks would be drooling at the prospect of renegociating contracts with dangerous back ends (hossa and Louongo). It looks like the league will not allow a trade and resign either. Ie Tampa trades Vinny to a rich team with money like toronto in a package deal that gets Toronto something attractive in there and then buys Vinny out and Tampa resigns him to league minimum.

Update 2:

I would buy him out. He is not really suited to a 3rd 4th line role and is not quite a top 6 forward on a contending team which Toronto should become soon.

Nonis said they weren't making any decisions on buyouts until after the draft. That might mean he is contemplating a move which will involve one of the two most likely to be bought out (after the for sure Komisarek) Maybe trading Komisarek for an asset and holding back $2MM will make more sense than buying him out. Say a flip of first round picks with Phoenix could include Komisarek with Leafs holding $2MM cash. The Coyotes get a former first round pick defenceman for $1.5MM per year the Leafs get $2.5MM off the cap and a 9 place jump in the draft. That is what cashback is about.

Buying out Grabovski seems like a good idea But doing like Ottawa did a few years back with Alfredsson sounds even better. Buy out and resign. Here's the plan buy him out and resign him at $2.5MM for 4 years. Grabovski makes $2MM more in the long run and Leafs save $3MM on cap. Love it.

Buyout window closes July 4th this year, free agency starts July 5th. The Leafs would have to gamble that they could sign another centre to fill the void if they did buyout Grabo. As great as a start to the short season Kadri had, he wasn't very noticeable down the stretch and in the playoffs - but I chalk that up to growing pains. I would definitely think about buying him out, even trading and retaining some contract, but at the end of the day that is a real tough decision to make.

Tom - Under the CBA teams cannot buyout a player and then sign him back.

Yesterday, Nonis said in an interview that they plan on keeping Bozak, so that is definitely a consideration.

I am not a fan of Grabo, and I agree that he's being overpaid right now. However, the centre position is already a hole in the Leafs roster. Does it really make sense to lose a centerman for nothing in return? Wouldn't that just deepen their weakness at that position?

If they are able to acquire a top centre player, then by all means, show Grabo the door. I'm just apprehensive about the thought of buying him out, and then not finding that star centre player to fill the hole.

They keep buying out 2nd and 3rd line players just to sign more 2nd and 3rd line players. It's a team spinning it's tires year after year. They would be better off buying out Phaneuf's contract and waiting for a decent player to come available as their new captain.

They should consider it, but I don't believe they will.
