Nokia has the strongest, most diverse patent portfolio in the mobile industry. You can look to that to see where mobile phones are headed in the future.
In the mid-to-long term, you can look forward to solar charging. Nokia is also investigating the use of graphene in designing mobile phones; a substance 'stronger than diamonds' that delivers flawless antenna reception (the results of which will be shared to other manufacturers) - to replace current plastics and metals. Flexible displays are just around the corner (pioneered by Nokia, but developed further by Samsung and LG).
In terms of software, location services are getting better. Indoor mapping has been pioneered by Nokia and Google.
