someone gave a dog to a neighbour, said it was a pitbull, but that it wasn't dangerous... I really don't think it's a good idea for him to take the dog on..

Pit bulls have killed children why would anyone take that chance but they do. They have turned on their owners.

To own a PitBull in the UK. You must have it temperament tested, licensed, tattooed, chipped, desexed and have policed checks once a year (to make sure they aren't being used for fights). The media is cruel to pitbulls. Any dog can turn, but I can guarantee that more humans have killed other humans than any dog. I work in a animal shelter, and we've had some PitBulls that are lovely and equally had ones that are horrible, just like any other dog. (not directed at you but) Also anyone that leaves a child alone with any dog, is just plain stupid.

What kind of tattoo? My dog has three dots tattooed inside his ear to show he's been desexed.
If the dog is illegal in your area, it will be illegal whether it's dangerous or not.
