Why are so many girls/women overly self-conscious of their physical appearance?

It can't be simply because of prejudice since multiple guys are judged the same way. And I'm not just talking about some make-up and clothing, I'm talking about extreme cases like eating disorders and plastic surgery obsession and blah, blah. And people say it's the modelling business (I agree 75%) but it's not only wannabe supermodels but nearly half of the teen girls and probably a large of portion of grown up women I've ran across (including friends and relatives) act that way. If you answer "because of men..." your answer would be reported immediately. Serious answers only!

Update:

@Summ: I'm talking about real extreme obsession not just some self-care.

Update 2:

@Saro: Normally I don't give a what, I'm just tired of all those types of answers. If I didn't write the warning I'd probably receive 75% of what I consider spam.

Cause women naturally objectify themselves and other women due to their homosexual cignitive bias.Women are more or less lesbians as far as visuals are concerned(seen in the way they prefer looking at women wearing skimpy clothes rather than men). Women are gender narcissistic

    lesbians:

"Women are nearly five times more likely to show an automatic

preference for their own gender than men are to show such favoritism

    for their own gender"

"A clear pattern shown in all four studies is that men do not like

themselves automatically as much as women like themselves,"

[Women find women more visually appealing based on human sexual

they do it because they are biologically programmed to objectify themselves and other women.

God is aware that physical appearance is distracting to humans. So often people look at the outside instead of looking at what really makes a person beautiful or ugly. What makes God beautiful is not his outside image but the Love He is! He loves us so much that he made a world for us that we couldn't possibly explore and understand fully in our lives. He could have put us in a habitrail like a hamster but he didn't. He LOVES us beyond our own understanding. Putting a physical image in front of us is a distraction. Also, we are flesh and blood. To look at his pureness would destroy us because compared to him, we are but dust. Once we know who God is (his true inner self) and are raised from the dead because we accept the sacrifice of His son for our shortcomings. We will see him in all his glory because we will have been given bodies which are pure and immortal.

Actually... men are more prone to eating disorders than females are. Females are just more vocal about it because men are portrayed to be "strong characters" and so when you hear men with an eating disorder, it's almost alienated because we don't know must information about that.

I also have to say that females are self-conscious because the idea of beauty for females have rapidly charged since the Victorian era. Females have always been portrayed as elegant beings and over centuries, our style has changed drastically. Desires of women who are curvier has changed to stick-thin women to "thick" women (in the men's world: women with large hips, thighs and bosoms but a tiny waist) to fit women... and the list goes on. Multicultural countries have added in and desires for tiny women or tall women; women with small noses or pale women came in and I could pin point it to the media advertising... but really, it's the woman wanting to be accepted and desired. Everyone wants to be desired and with majority of the people desiring different things, women can't be all different things at once and so it took to extreme disorders.

Be mindful that it might not always be this case. Women with eating disorders also have problems with themselves. They're not always 110% satisfied with their bodies and feel like they always need changing. Anorexia is a disease--you cannot create it. Bulimia is the same. They feel like they always NEED to purge or starve themselves because it makes them feel more beautiful. They feel like they need to start excessively purging or starving and it becomes a horrid addiction and disease. You can't get off it until you start loving yourself and changing the way you view yourself. It's quite sad, really. Men are the same way. It could be inherited by genetics, it could be inherited by society but it all marks down to really the way we view ourselves.

Because they have no choice. Women are more defined by their looks, men by their social status.
