Christians, wages of sin is death....?

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."- Romans 6:23

wages = payment due for action performed

gift = a present not paid for by the receiver

So committing sin gets you the payment due of death. Eternal life is a present from God because of Jesus. Could someone please tell me why some Christians believe that eternal life is the wages of a righteous and holy lived life? The two concepts are opposites. A gift cannot be earned.

Update:

@Daniel and what is this "living a holy life" version of yours?

After stating that “the wages sin pays is death,” the Bible goes on to say, “but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23.

What Jehovah God eventually did to make good that gift was to provide something that would cover the loss resulting from Adam’s transgression.

In Hebrew, the word ka·phar′ at first probably meant “cover” or perhaps “wipe off,” and it is also translated “atonement.”

In other words, Jehovah provided a suitable means to cover over sin inherited from Adam and wipe out the damage that resulted so that those who qualify for that gift could be liberated from the condemnation of sin and death.

It is worth noting that the “wages” (death) are something we have earned, albeit unwillingly, by our sinful nature. On the other hand, the everlasting life that God makes available is something totally undeserved that we could never earn on our own merits.

But The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you FREE from the laws of SIN and death. "Romans 8:2" They have a hard time believing that Jesus came to give back to us what, God breathed into Adam.

You will not hear a Christian speak that salvation can or must be earned! Cult members may, but not those who are believers in Christ. You have discovered grace.

    Eph 2:8 - 9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

    Eph 2:10

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them

We are saved to do good works as a result of our salvation, we are not saved BY our good works.

Obviously you, like myself are a Protestant versus a Catholic. That said, Jesus also talks at length of fruitless trees and being the "light" in the world. You cannot truly accept and want to live through Christ by not living a holy life.

You are correct. There is nothing we do that wins God's unmerited favor. He loves whom He chooses to love and saves whom He chooses to save. Thing is, God knew us before we were formed in our mother's womb. He has intimate knowledge of how we think, what we'll choose, and why we'll choose it. God's omniscience probably plays into whom He chooses to save and when. I believe all have an equal chance to hear the gospel of Christ in their lifetime. Maybe many times. Our hearts are either softened or hardened. God doesn't do that, our own choices and sovereignty of will does that.

We don't earn it. Our inheritance into the Kingdom of God is totally unmerited.

. . . For by grace are we saved through faith, this is not of ourselves. It is a gift from God. Not of works, so that no man may boast. Ephesians2:8-9. Amen.

Those Christians are wrong. You cannot earn eternal life.

    Wages: are earned and deserved.

    Gifts: are unearned and undeserved.
