Bad news. It is a serious offense But are you being charged with misdemeanor or felony assault? Good news. It's a first offense. And the injuries are minor. Which means, that unless the cop is REALLY ticked off, or the D.A. is looking to make an example, you might be able to get the charges dropped or reduced.
Talk to a lawyer, be prepared to offer a sincere apology to the officer in the presence of a judge, and be willing to do some community service. Do those things, and you have a fair chance of getting off with a stern warning and time served, if any. plus said community service.
Oh, and make sure any charges ARE misdemeanor. Most places require you to admit to felonies, and can mess up your future. A misdemeanor conviction will cause you a lot less hassle, or even be expunged after a few years. A lawyer will be able to give you more information on that.

Hello Craig,
In English law "assault" is frightening someone into believing they may be hit.
Do not drink alcohol if it leads you to become violent.
Police officers are only doing their job.
You should seek legal advice as soon as possible.
Robert.

Try and find the CCTV that shows you soberly asking for directions to the bus station and getting beaten up for the sake of it. That, or put your valuables in storage.

Don't go out drinking on Friday nights. Keep your hands to yourself. We were supposed to learn this valuable life lesson in Kindergarten.

You really need to hire a lawyer.
And you might seriously consider lowering your drinking limit.
