Ideally I'd be Hitler's valet or a Hitler Youth campfire safety officer.

Barring that - the Kriegsmarine... UBoats... glamourous, high paying and the poster-boys of the German Navy... but the highest casualty rate of any armed branch of any military in all of WW2? nuuuuuuu.

Waffen-SS, doubt I'd pass what was an exceptionally tough recruitment process.

Luftwaffe ideally, but I'm not well educated.

Wehrmacht for me, just a foot slogger digging in the dirt hoping I don't get gut-shot.

*chuckles at the thumbs down as if I'd would have been accepted by any 1930s era of any nations air force - myself not being a 1930s college graduate.. and not being steeped in NAZI idiology the SS wouldn't have accepted me - thanks for the tsk tsk but I still think I'm safely correct in my answer as given*

I was asked a somewhat similar question in my first year of teaching - 1952 - by a class of 15-year-olds, who remembered the last phase of the War - "You're proud of having been in the Royal Navy, Sir - if you hadn't, what would be next most proud to have been in ?" My immediate reply of "The German Navy" brought a few moments of complete silence, and I then proceeded to tell them why.

The Kriegsmarine was absolutely first-class - Churchill always said that the "Battle of the Atlantic" was his greatest concern. From Day 1, it was vastly outnumbered and, with the exception of 2 of its vessels, outgunned and outclassed, yet even so its ships were handled with extraordinary skill and detemination. From the little "Admiral Graf Spee" (she was only 10,000 tons) on the far side of the world, to "Scharnhorst" and the massive "Bismarck" in the North Atlantic, the U-boats, in which service became- quite literally - suicidal, and the dashingly-handled E-boats - with both of which I had direct personal experience - all were worthy opponents to be admired, and the term "Nazi" had no real relevance.

The most extraordinary example - in which I again had direct involvement - occurred on March 9th. 1945 - yes - 1945 ! On that night, the units stationed in the Channel Islands, completely cut off, and with the war already lost, carried out a raid on the American supply-port of Granville on the Normandy coast.

With a clapped-out E-boat, a small minesweeper, and some commandeered fishing-boats, they made short work of the big American PT Boat stationed there, which had c-gone out to intercept them, landed, overcame the American resistance ashore, destroyed the Dock installations, sank the merchant ships in the harbour - and "did a Hornblower" on the one still anchored outside, boarding and capturing it, and taking it back to Jersey !

( For fuller story, go to www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar and then "The Granville Raid" in the Naval section.)

If our chaps had done something like that somewhere, we'd still be showing the film version every Christmas !

I would have enlisted in the Waffen SS, and more than likely been accepted as I am Blonde, Blue eyed, and have a here say "Aryan" backround, as my family has been Germanic for the last 2000 years.

They were the best soldiers in all of Germany, and the most Fanatic, aside the Hitler Youth divisions. I would see it as an honour to serve alongside the SS, and you Indians also saw an SS division as well.

The underground military of the German socialists. The "Resistance."

Besides, the Nazis would have killed me because of my ethnic background.

I have no truck with nationalists. Nationalism is ALWAYS completely evil in developed countries, and much of the time in neocolonies and former colonies as well.

Kriegsmarine. Honorable service, mediocre conditions (versus eastern front troops in Stalingrad), almost no killing of Jews, decent pay.

I'd try to get in on their secret rocket programs. That way after the war I could be brought to the US and work at NASA.

I don't think they had a choice in the matter. Certainly the SS and Gestapo were specially selected.

I would pack up and go home as I would be illegibly as I am not a German
