How do i get rid of this smell?

I recently moved into a home that was built in the 1800's and last renovated in the 1950's. The previous occupant was very elderly and apparently had no help to clean her home. We've cleaned it out but the cabinets still smell of mouse feces. We've disinfected but it still smells.

I rewash everything in the cabinets before i use it because I'm paranoid of getting some strange disease from the dust that seems to reappear every morning.

How do i get rid of the smell? It's caustic.

The best way would be to paint the cabinets. It will not only get rid of the smell but cover up any potential asbestos that might be in the old paint. Any paint before 1970 has the potential for lead as well.

Mice droppings will be in the walls and attic as well. Have someone check the ventilation system to check for holes in the duct-work. They might be contaminated and in need of replacement. As the dropping dry out they become dust that can get into these areas causing illness.

You shouldn't have dust in your cabinets every morning

Call in builder or landlord and voice your concern about this

Use a cleaner that has some chlorine bleach in it. Chlorine destroys everything, including most odors.

You could mix your own, but make it dilute (look for dilution recommendations online) or it may smell pretty strong for a while, making the kitchen cabinets smell like a laundry room.

    Try vinegar.
